Conversely, many times when bad things happen good things also happen, preventing you from being totally bummed.

The guys who write Deathwatch just gave an epic "FUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKK YOOOOOU" to their playerbase.

The entire setting is doomed. Not the Tyranid kinda-sorta doomed that they had previously, since Tyranids occasionally get beat up and sent home without any cookies. No, this a whole other level of doomed, a Rocks Fall Everyone Dies waiting in the wings for their entire setting. The main fortress and logistical center of the player's nominal faction is built on a world housing a sleeping legion of the UNDEAD TERMINATOR ROBOTS that are the Necrons. Nothing the players do will ever matter, nothing they accomplish is worth anything, all of it is dust in the wind when the silver legion marches.

That'll get people playing!
