My condolences, Mongoose. Hope they recover speedily. My dad was actually admitted to hospital a few days ago, and whilst this is probably not as bad as what's on your end, he had an ulcer in his eye. Not fun.

Well I hope that your parents have a swift return to health, all three of them.

It's not been quite as eventfull in my corner. Spent eight hours defragging my HDD as it had almost 200GB of fragmented files, then I blinked and found out that I had dosed off for a quarter of an hour.

back to the clubbing thing, i was reminded tonight of a type that doesn't suck hairy nuts. comedy club. went to support my friend who bravely did a comedic "magic" act on "clash of the comics" night, in which he hammered a nail into his nose. i almost didn't go, because i'd seen the act before and frankly a lot of the jokes he threw in are cliche and/or groaners, and i figured he was going to crash and burn. turns out, he got 2nd place out of 12. most of the 12 were about what i expected, a couple laughs mixed in with some light chuckles, but there were a couple REALLY good ones. the guy who won was almost as good as the headliner. the first and last competitors were well and truly **** though. like, physically painful kind of bad. people were laughing only because they didn't know what the **** was going on kind of bad. and there was the one guy that had a five second set because the first thing he did was scream something that sounded close to "mother****er" and they cut his mike and lights.

the headliner though, dear god. i'm not really a fan of what you might call "black" comedy, but this guy had me laughing so hard i can't remember what the jokes were other than that they were hysterical. i'd share some of the highlights, but they contain copious usage of the kind of language that has started flamewars here before.

he wasn't under the language restrictions the contestants were, and he made sure everyone knew it.

I miss the ancient 95-era defrag utility. It had all those colored boxes for disk sectors, and I'd sit there entranced watching it "eat" the fragmented portions. Good times.

So. Got off work at 11, got home. Started working on homework. It's now 1:17 am and I'm seriously considering doing up a batch of homemade bagels. Which will take me until 3:30 or so to finish. I need to be up around 7 - 7:30 to get in to Uni for my 8:30 lab.

Methinks I'm a bit of a masochist.

Just finished a sleepless speed-reading of NaruTaru and am filled with feelings of:

Coupled with my mind replacing entire chapters (starting from the last one) with images of puppies to keep me from getting depressed by it.

Never before have I felt so betrayed by an intro to an anime, nor have hated my need to read before watching.

Thought I recognised the name and looked it up... yeah, I'd heard about Naru Taru when I was reading up about things like Shin Megami Tensei. I don't think it's something I'll try watching/reading in the near future; but then for some reason I got an urge to try to acquire Devil Survivor of all things (and still do, but the 3DS version of the first game hasn't been released for my region)...

One of my damn neighbors 3 buildings down put their dogs out on the tiny ass porch and they clearly don't want to be there. They've been yelping like they're being attacked by a bear for the past hour. It's 11:30 and I have an exam on nuclear theory tomorrow. LET THEM THE **** BACK IN.

I've had surprisingly good success with cheap Italian takeout. Chicken parm dinners for $7--gave me ~1500 kcals. Toss in cereal at breakfast and instant ramen for dinner--about $8/day and requiring but 10 minutes at the stove.

Otherwise, for cheaper look through your local grocers. Many sell chicken breasts and beef chuck for $3-4/pound in quantity. 2.5 lbs or more sounds like a lot, but split into 5 portions and you're well on your way to cheap dinners. Medium-grain rice ("sticky rice") and potatoes ($2/lb at Aldi) will hold you pretty well. Also examine your local supermarkets. Especially if you have a Wegmans--most of their house brand food is organic. Even if you don't, look at their more nutritious cereals and add fruit and nuts to it. Good cheap food.

It's not the #1 most nutritious diet (I'd prefer an organic paleo-diet) but it's far better than half-starving. I've been there and back.
