I'm concerned I may be accidentally extorting/accepting bribes from one of our regular hotel guests.  She speaks only Chinese, and I've been the only one who was able to help her in the past because of it (thank [deity of your choice] for Google Translate on my phone), so she always insists on dealing with me.  She's gotten to know the routine fairly well: she comes in on Saturday night, the hotel's totally sold out, but we usually have a couple cancellations at 3am.  She comes to the desk around 11pm, asks "rooms?"  I shake my head, she says "Ok" and points at 3 o'clock on her watch.  I nod, and she comes back at 3am.  So far, I've always been able to get a hotel room for her at 3am, but there's never a guarantee.  Lately, she's been giving me a $25 tip when she first comes to the desk, when there's no guarantee that I'll be able to get her a room.  Tonight, I tried giving the money back and explaining "no tip until you get a room."  She gave it back to me.  When I was (barely) able to get her a room at 3am just now, she gave me another $25 tip.  I'm worried she may have thought I was saying $25 wasn't enough earlier.

She has a Chinese passport; is it common practice to have to bribe the night clerk to get a hotel room in China?  I finally decided to just make a reservation for her for the next four Saturdays so she doesn't have to wait until 3am anymore.  If she continues tipping me so generously, I'll take it as a compliment on my guest service skills rather than a bribe.

If I had to guess I'd imagine that you're more likely violating some hotel policy than any law. You're not threatening her. Depending on where you live it very well would be bribery but I can't imagine anyone bother to prosecute unless something more sinister was going on (even then I can't imagine them having a good case on you). The one thing that I find suspicious is that she never actually bothered placing reservations. Does your hotel have any rules in place to deal with things like this?

No, I don't think I'm violating any hotel policy.  We're all allowed to accept tips, and some very wealthy guests tip their favorite employees upwards of $100 on a regular basis.  She never bothered placing reservations because she has such a hard time communicating with us in person, it'd be nearly impossible for her to make a reservation over the phone (she could do it online using Google Translate, but I don't think she knows that).  It's that language barrier that had me worried.  The worry has subsided; I think I'll be fine.

In other news, instead of fighting with my ISP, I just got a dedicated server with a hosting company.  I ordered it before I went to bed, and it was ready to go when I got up.  Feels like Christmas.

I'm not actually interested in drinking. What I want is

(1) Meet people interested in the EDM community, and
(2) Go to events once every week or so where EDM is played and I can dance, preferably with women and in a sexualized manner.

Well, yes and no. At practically every party I've ever been to, they only play rap music (99% of which I hate), some hip hop (most of which I don't like, unless it's the Beastie Boys), and a few rock songs which I invariably won't like (usually something like Nickelback or Theory of a Dead Man). I've never had a good time at any of those parties.

It's got to have the right atmosphere, but most of all, it's got to be electronic dance music. Trance, house, electro house , techno, dubstep, drum & bass, whatever! I like it all.

I've done some internet searches and asked around and have concluded that there are either no such parties on campus, or if there are, they are not publicized. So I figure my best bet is to hit up some nightclubs that have EDM and 18+ nights.

Surely this. You go to NC State, right? Big public university, all kinds of people. Admittedly a bit unlikely to randomly run into people into EDM from just your dorm and classes, although with math/science/engineering classes it's slightly more likely but not by much.

Are there student groups that people into EDM would likely be a part of? Try going to those groups' meetings and events and getting to know the people there. There's probably a directory of active student groups somewhere, or you can ask the student activities office or equivalent for a list.
