@Mongoose: really? But it's a modern(ish) laptop, so it has a built-in bluetooth whatchamajigger it could talk to directly? What the derp.

I'm tired but it's only 0h30 :blah:

apparently you can build a shotgun out of stuff you can buy on the other side of airport security:

http://hackaday.com/2013/12/01/newsstand-shotgun-hack-poised-to-further-ruin-air-travel/

its only a matter of time till the terrorists exploit this fine example of redneck engineering.

just bought a cyber monday laptop on impulse.  not EXACTLY what i wanted (lacks a trackpoint aka the little nub thing and is windows 8) and from a brand i hoped to avoid just because the last one was such a pain in the ass for a long while, but the specs were too damn good to pass up for the price.  in addition i have until jan 31 to change my mind and send it back for full refund less return shipping.

I think that would be Bluetooth, unless it's just a plain wireless radio signal like on a cordless phone (do they still use that for wireless stuff?).  The dongle would just be your receiver unit.
Yes, "plain wireless radio signals" are still used; wireless mice, headsets, and apparently keyboards.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Codethulhu GitHub wgah'nagl fhtagn.

schrödinbug (noun) - a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place.

<Aesaar> literary criticism is vladimir putin

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again
<MageKing17> "That doesn't really make sense to me, but I'll assume it was being done for a reason."

<MageKing17> God damn, I do not understand how this is breaking.
<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!

from what i've seen the vast majority of wireless mice/keyboards are just standard RF wireless, especially lately.

its all 2.4 ghz to me (also known as the ism band). bluetooth is a complete stack of hardware and software, so a complete solution. a solution that has no competition with the exception of whatever proprietary specific purpose protocols are in use by manufacturers of wireless peripherals. logitech has its own radio standard, as does ms. idk whatever happened to wireless usb, it was supposed to blow bluetooth out of the water, but i guess it turned to vapor. i personally think bluetooth is utter crap.

lacks a trackpoint aka the little nub thing

that hasn't been a common feature for years, has it?

I miss it though. I always found it much more convenient than those damned touchpads laptops have these days.

(I hate the fact not one of them actually holds the complete song. Least the last one was 95% of it)

The Comptine song was played for my brother in law's father who had passed away half a year before they got married. I had played the same song for my uncle's funeral a couple years before that

I really need to get a damned recording device

It's standard on Lenovo ThinkPad's, I don't believe any of their other lines have it, and they seem to have a patent lockdown on the TrackPoint.

no it hasn't, but touchpads blow ass.  also i intend to use this as truly a LAPtop, so a usb mouse isn't useful either.  what i got is a lenovo, but it's missing the trackpoint.  i've seen them HPs and Dells also, but they are far less common with those than lenovo.

and no nuke.  never once seen a laptop with a trackball.

I'm reminded of this old gem by this conversation.  I wonder if anyone's ever tried mounting a vertical attachment onto one and turning it into an impromptu little joystick.
