There's free programs you can run on your own PC to do Ontario and Canada taxes, at least. Heck, the government website outright recommends one of the free ones, and works with them to endure it's certified to work with NetFile.

apparently i paid $40 a pop for 'preparing' federal (FREE efile!  what a deal!) and state file (FREE prep!  WHAT A DEAL!)  and by prepare, i mean the online copy/paste tool.  yes, it was HR block, but extensive searching failed to yield any free options.

What.  I do mine for free on TurboTax every year, and a quick Google search for "free tax return" nets plenty more options.  I think most of them still charge for state returns (I live in a state that doesn't do state income tax, so I don't do state tax returns, but I know TurboTax charges extra for state returns).

I thought the IRS had a site you could do your federal online for free, as long as it's the 1040EZ (or whatever). And your state should have a similar thing for theirs, and even if they charge for e-file, you can just print and mail it instead for the cost of a stamp or two.

Submitted my online packet to be a Catalyst Demo Agent a few hours ago.  Need to get together some pictures of my various painted minis and a few demonstration beginner scenarios (and a note of interest from a local game shop; that part is the easy one), snail mail them off, and await a response.  Given that there are approximately zero Demo Agents within about two hours of here, I'd say odds are good, even if I weren't practically a certifiable expert on BattleTech.

I guess in a few weeks I'll get the t-shirt to prove it.

Granted interest rates have been pretty pathetic of late but arguably having to owe a little is better then getting a big refund.  If your getting a big refund that means the government has been gleefully sitting on your money for the year whereas if you are getting a small refund or a owe a little that money has been working for you earning interest.

I think my savings account winds up accruing a grand total of a few pennies per month.  And at least taken as a lump sum, I owed more than "a little."

I can't speak to everything, but my account is as .03%.  I get roughly $.04 a month from it.  The service charges are nearly a hundred times that.  Would rather have a refund.

I don't think I'd put my money in a bank that charges me for them to have it. Considering they use folks' account money to make loans, if they want to have service fees they can go pound sand.

At least for savings, I'd check out the local credit unions, they aught to offer better rates.
