Tanks aren't allowed to drive on roads, as they tear up the asphalt. Only the M113 APC can, because it weighs a lot less than a tank, and it has special rubber pads on its treads for driving on roads.

Yeah i know, they make mincemeat of it. Are the rubber pads a varient of the standard M113 design?

They may be; they're afixed to each track section individually. Look here:

I'm on the left, FYI. I've circled the treads with rubber pads; you can see the rubber as the big central flat section in each track section.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

confused? My parents would:
• Shoot me :snipe:
 • Dismember me :headz:
 • Kill me :mad2:
 • Delete all evidence that I ever lived because I let a "stranger" in the house :devilidea
 • and promptly kick out the HLPer who was staying over (if somehow I got you into the house) :(
 •
So sorry but I really couldn't even though it would be really cool to actually meet one of you guys.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

I'm of two minds about this one.

On the one hand, I met my wife online, ten years ago. We finally got married two years ago.

On the other hand, over the years, I've grown to dislike dealing with people in person. I don't like people showing up at my door unannounced. I don't like people showing up at my door at all, come to think of it. I recently had a dinner party for my family. That was very difficult for me to deal with. I much prefer to deal with people at a distance, with a phone or a network between them and I.

Yeah. I'm f----d in the head. I know.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Not in my end of earth, it's good really, 'cause i find you weird from the opposite end of the globe, let alone face to face.

Mik, you're not alone. I find it a lot easier to deal with people online; even moreso over email than instant messaging, when I know I don't have someone over the other side of the connection impatiently waiting...

But I think meeting with someone can provide really good fellowship, and is crucial to us as social creatures. A lot of communication is lost when you can't see someone, hear the tone of the voice, or whatever. I like meeting up with people. :)

PS. I voted yes, naturally. Thanks to all those who'd welcome me. C'mon, who wouldn't, if you heard 'The Steak is here!' hollering from your front door? :D

I really got into the whole online friends thing a year ago, up until a few months ago. I've calmed down since then, and I really value and even crave spending time with people in RL™ - especially, uhm... certain people. :D

Lol! :D Well, if I ever smell Pita Pizza waffing into my bedroom - look out the window and see a cool guy hopping out of a M113, then I'll go and unlock the doors. ;)

PS. Shrike? I'll be waiting for you and Barni to turn up too... :D

hey, dude, not before wedding ;)

Online is cool, but real life is cool too. Of course, 'm kindda lucky, i'm the sort  of lonely guy that stays in the corner of the room when there's a party, usually, but 3 years ago, I got to met, well, you know, you meet one guy and you know you'll be firnedf for a long, long time... well, I got to met 3 guys and 1 girl of that kind :D we're still all together, even if now I'm away in another corner of france :). I have 4 best friends . And if I met them only online, life wouldn't have been half as fun as it is now.
