Finally got arch linux to work. It's highly interesting. I mainly did it for KDEmod. Damn was it hard to set this thing up. Create your own xorg.conf, create your own user....manually. That wasn't too bad, just wish they had a better unified xorg.conf creation implementation.

The rc.conf idea was great though. All the  main settings in one file. That way you don't have to hunt down all the rest of the config files.

Is anyone else arching in here? I totally got my pacman on

I've used it once, very similar to Gentoo but instead of compiling the packages, it uses binaries to install them. It has the advantage of being faster installing things (in some cases way faster) but the seperation of the AUR with pacman is somewhat confusing.

It was way confusing for me too. Pacman i'm used too. But, doing all that other stuff is something debian always handled for me. The reason also why i never fully followed through with arch because of that. I finally forced myself to do it. Arch really is a great base for linux. And i wanted to  use it very badly.

So what is Arch? It looks like just a simple lightweight distro to me. What's so special?

Note: Arch Linux does not use any abstraction layers to administrate your system, and in most cases, closely conforms to the FHS. As a result, you can usually stick to any instructions published by the author of a particular software package, or whatever you find in a search engine of your choice, and it likely will work out without confusing your system, because your system just does not 'care'.

At least that's what I liked about it personally. And the availability of 686 binaries.
Too bad I couldn't get it to work with my hardware when I tried it 1..2 years ago. Reminds me I should try it again some time..

I realized a couple of months ago that arch has good package management, repo setup, package manager, everything's i686, it's stable, and it makes a great base for many distros, surprised there's not so many distros that are arch based. It makes a great alternative to debian and redhat. Especially redhat. Redhat's one that always give me a bad taste in my mouth.
