Do your "real" robots fling about pure, concentrated manly spirit?  No?  I didn't think so.

What the hell is with all the American-bashing on the internet? SERIOUSLY?
Direct reaction to the all present American-praising.
I just read a book from John Ringo... :/
Many Americans, though not all of them (in terms of "internet presence", not real numbers) quite provoke this with their "We are the best" in the internet. ^^

Well, to set stories in your own country is quite normal, everyone does it - Germany, French, Japan, USA, Russia. It only bothers if something that was important to the story couldnt be translated to the new place, imagine Inuyasha taking place in the USA.

A few Anime that arent set in Japan: Monster (Germany), Blassreiter(Germany), Noir(France), Golgo 13 (various places, the main character is Japanese though)

Robotech is reasonably possible. Consider the quality of CGI mecha in Transformers.

On the other hand, GitS will probably stink because...well, it's GitS. The movie wasn't that great. (****, I would bet money it only got anywhere because the Major was damn near nude most of the time.) Cowboy Bebop can't be done justice in a cinematic format and will probably feel like Uwe Boll was directing. I don't know enough about Gunnm (Battle Angel to the rest of you) to make a solid judgement, but I read a couple of the manga once, so I think that's possible.

Voltron can only become an epic disaster.

I concur with this assesment. Macross had great characters and an interesting story, so I can see it working if given proper attention. That said, any screens from it, or is it only in the planing stage?

I just looked at some of the sketches, designs and mock-ups for Macros/Robotech the movie..

some of them are rather good..but DAMN...those actor mock-ups.. Goran Višnjić as Henry Gloval????? Sure, he's a great actor and I like am and all...but shouldn't Gloval be older?
And some of the other mock-up...oh gawd.

you are clearly doing it wrong, this show is not intended to be taken seriously, it is a comedy, when you see the 150 lightyear tall robot flinging galaxies about as shuriken, you are supposed to be laughing about it. the show has a similar approach to awesome as did Invader Zim, in that it has action sequences which are hilarious due to ridiculousness and yet at the same time are executed so perfectly they are also awesome. the show is a parody of typical anime cliches like how the main characters are able to violate some of the most basic laws of physics out of sheer force of will, or how the robots talk. everything about this show is so ****ing hilariously awesome and you totally don't ****ing get it because your trying to make seance out of it.

Exactly.  "Realism" and "Gurren-Lagann" shouldn't be used within five paragraphs of each other.  It's a ridiculously over-the-top, action-packed, uber-manly slice of awesome.  I watched the final four episodes in one sitting, and I'm convinced that they gave me a bigger high than any artificial chemical ever could.

*this is what happens when you change the number of categories on a whim*

so you were saying - it's so Bad it's Good trope kinda thing?
Well, to be honest I only caught a few snippets of the show and it really didn't impress me. Perhaps I should look into it some more, but redicolously over-the-top anime usually isn't my thing :P Granted, it's not for everyone.

Now, back on Topicz.. anyone seen those robotech design links? Have you seen the actors they're contemplating???

Taste is one thing...dismissing pure concentrated awesomeness and GAR is another. :p

And no, I wouldn't classify it as "so bad it's good" in the least.  It simply takes the super robot tropes of old and utilizes them to both pay tribute to what came before and to put a new spin on the genre.  It fully acknowledges the fact that it's completely over-the-top, and it does so with a massive grin on its face the entire time.

the show is poking fun at anime cliches and giant robot ones in particular while at the same time honoring them and emphasizing what is good about them. I didn't think I'd like it at first either, the whole face robot thing, but as soon as you let go of expecting it to be based in anything remotely related to the real world, it suddenly become the awesomest  thing ever.
like OMG he gave his giant robot giant robot sunglasses! WHAT THE ****!?
and then you just go with it and it becomes awesome.

it is a perfect blend of action and comedy with a bit of drama added for flavor.

everything, _EVERYTHING_ about this show is just so ridiculous that at any point saying something like "that just wouldn't work" just doesn't work. just remember it is primarily a comedy and parody/tribute, remember you are supposed to be laughing most of the time and you'll be fine. I mean there is a serious sort of undercurrent to it, the whole humans trying to break free from oppression thing, but the serious stuff is never allowed to get in the way of the humor or the action. it is first and foremost a joke. a joke that is awesome and manly!!!!!

There comes a point at which parody is no longer seperable from what it is attempting to mock. Not only is it well past that point, it's gotten beyond becoming a parody of a parody of a parody and there's just nothing left. Irreverence has become outright stupidity. I'm not saying it wouldn't work about anything. I'm saying it's so incredibly goddamn silly I can no longer stomache the sight of it. It's like watching Jackass or something: you're informed this is supposed to be funny, but there's no comedic genius here, just a barrage of progressively more stupid and silly things.

God knows there are other settings that can be equally irreverent with reality. (40k comes to mind. Oh, don't look at me like that, you know it's true.) But they're not nearly so outright silly. If you want an amusing comedy take on mecha in space, I recommend Nadesico.
