I cant get FS2 to install/work properly on my pc

Can you please write here more info? Did you simply DL files using the FreeSpace Open Installer or you have a copy of FS2 and want to install the upgrades?

Root files have been removed from mod packs so the only way to get them is to buy FreeSpace 2 from Good old Games(GoG), which is a handy site.

About 6 months ago i downloaded the latest (at that time) version of the same installer,
i ran the installer and everything worked perfectly and I completed the game easily
but unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, a rather messed up mod which I downloaded wrecked the entire game on my PC

I recently downloaded the latest version of Fs2 open installer from a random website,
i have tried this a number of times on different websites but it has not worked on all these occasions

I have, unsuccessfully, spent ages trying to get it to work, as it is the best game i have ever played

Also, did you overwrite the old FS2 folder? I'm afraid you got rid of vital root files in the process. The best thing would be to post  a screenshot of your FS2 folder, showing its subfolders and VP files.

I used quite a large number of mods, i can't recall which it was
I think I added files for a huge Corvette just before it stopped working

If you've acquired your FS2 from a shady source, you're on your own.

It sounds like you used the installer back when it provided the full game for free.

You now need to purchase the full FS2 from GoodOldGames (supporting the success of Freespace, I might add) and then run the installer over it.

If you bothered to chekc the link, you'd see instructions for installing FSO. Then, if you read the second line, you'll find out that FSO needs FS2 in order to function. And FS2 is not downloaded by the Installer. Anymore. Because we have Good Old Games who are doing one of the most wonderful things known to man: distributing classic games, such as FreeSpace 2, for more than fair prices. Legally.

Then, it would be appropriate to mention that you wouldn't be in this mess had you used judgement when installing mods back when you did that. Keep them in mod folders. Do not touch \freespace2\data ever, no matter who says what. And particularly, if there was a single mod that messed up your FreeSpace, removing it would have solved the problem.

I did bother to check it and it seems to me that all i have learned from this, is that i need to buy from GoG and then repeat the same steps that I have already been trying.
and might i point out that, apart from the link, the rest of your comment seemed to me to be a poor judgement of my choice to attempt to download FS2 of a different source, which I do not consider to be "Shady" I have downloaded many things from this site and, illegal or not, it is extremely useful

Department of Redundancy Department might be able to help you with a working link that works... However you won't find a link to FS2 download from HLP due to reasons already explained.


However, if you haven't completely nuked your FS2 folder (a questionable thing to do in the first place seeing you didn't have any install media backed up), there is still hope.

If you still have the following files somewhere in your hard drive, you can easily use them as the root files for a new FS2 installation:

root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp


Those are the retail VP files and they are, in nutshell, the only files you need to have in order to make a functional FS2_Open install directory.

So, if you have them, you can get the rest via Turey's installer. If not, you need to aquire them. Buying the retail FS2 game is the only officially sanctioned way to do that. The files used to be accessible via Turey's installer because legally aquiring FS2 was, for a long time, a daunting task to complete since there's a limited number of physical copies available and copies weren't sold in downloadable form - until GoodOldGames came into the picture and started offering FS2 online with a very acceptable price, so people are just pointed there.

If you decide to... aquire the files some other way, we seriously don't want to know how you go about it. It's none of our business and we would rather you didn't tell. Partly because most people here think that FS2 is an awesome game and few odd bucks isn't a bad price for it, and partly because of plausible deniability (and it's just generally stupid to advertise your illegal capacities and tendencies anywhere, even in the net - you aren't as incognito in the tubes as you might think). Just aquire the files as your conscience tells you is good and right and come back when you have them, one way or nother. Until then, we can't help you.


And, in future, it's a good rule of thumb to never ever put any extra files at all in the main ..\FreeSpace2\ or ..\FreeSpace2\data\*\ directories. It's far better to maange additional materials with mod folders, which basically make it impossible to dysfunctionalize your basic FS2 installation, which will become a matter of importance when you get the basic game functional, so go and find/get those files I listed before there can be any additional instructions.


EDIT: Also, your signature thingy occupies obscene amount of vertical space, so you might want to reconstruct it in a more horizontally aligned fashion.

The next reason that I am Currently unwilling to purchase Fs2 Is that,  I am Irish (therefore I don't use dollars, this makes buying from GoG more difficult and, therefore, time consuming)

Well, as it has been discussed repeatedly, we'd appreciate if people who don't own FS2 yet would buy it from GOG.  Hardly needless criticism. Next, there was this thing about whether you've completely erased your FS2 or if you happened to have the necessary files to get things running quickly. Hardly needless criticism. Now, we're waiting to see whether your problem has been solved or not. If not, you know what to do and after you've done it, we can continue.
