Re: Games that still surprise
FreeSpace 2.  On the mission where you escort the Iceni, I encountered a very amusing bug.  It was time for the ships to jump out, but for some reason a ship decided to change its path to be in front of the Iceni, and aiming due right of it. I happened to be flying along side it.

Needless to say, the Iceni jumped out first, and I went flying multiple kilometers in a matter of seconds. The other ship decided that it had to reach its original destination before jumping out (would have taken ages), so I was forced to put it down.  :P

Surprise of the month: The new God of War 3 trailer. HOLY ****! :eek2:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45513.html

I was so disapointed with the first trailer but now (this new one is the full version of the old)...       ...this is going to be the game of the current generation.

QFT. That game was deep and fantastic. No RPG since made can match it.

Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far, tends to surprise me in unpleasant ways each playthrough, teaching me over and over that the computer is not stupid and it will not hesitate to crush you.

Re: Games that still surprise
Ah damn it! I'd always assumed Navara was invilnerable on the 747 but after she killed whatsisface a GEP gun round cut her down to size. Well, lots of little sizes actually. It occured to me I might be able to save him but I did a quicksave before trying and haven't any earlier saves. So to try the resuce I have to start from scratch (again)

A full clip from an assualt rifle (on easy) usually finishes her off.

Try tossing an EMP grenade in the corner. She should run for the exit, allowing you to take her out without any risk to the hostage.

Baldurs Gate 2...

yeah. I still wish sb (Bioware themselves) would make a full Trilogy Remake, updating the weak BG1. Yeah, I know of the BGtutu, the NPC banter pack and so on but BG1 still remains weak, especially regarding your choices or the lack of.

Much as I'm impressed with the amount of character choices and how you can play the game multiple times with each playthrough being different, what surprised me the most about BG II is that the designer who thought it would be good game design to constantly railroad the player wasn't simply booted out of the door after the 3rd time he suggested "Let's have an enemy turn up, say something and then kidnap a member of the player's party before he can do anything"

Unfortunately, when you have a story-driven game, some things simply HAVE to happen.
F'course, they could have written a different plot, but who knows how that would have turned out..

I own all Bioware Games, so I know of DragonAge too of course. Has the BG spirit, but is not BG.
And the party is smaller  :sigh:

For me there is one: Falcon 4 Allied Force.

I don't really get it how much they have managed to stuff in there. Having played it for three years it still feels like you have experienced only about 30 % of it.

Yes it has it's bad moments, but in overall it is still unsurpassed with the most complex dynamic campaign and flying model I have seen.

You might be interested in this, if you already own Razorwork's Enemy Engaged series (Apache Havoc and Comanche Hokum). In the latest release you get to fly the Mi24V with pilot's cockpit. You need to check if your graphics card will be able to run it as it has issues with newer cards. I've been playing EECH on and off for years but I never get very far.

I've dwelt on purchasing Allied Force, I saw it going for cheap in a local games shop recently. But I doubt I have the time available to sink the hours of practice needed into it to start really enjoying it.

Re: Games that still surprise
I've played through DX on its most difficult level (which honestly isn't that difficult) probably a dozen times and I *think* I've now found just about every little secret in terms of plot/dialogue that the game has tucked away.

I never bother with Anna's killswitch - it's much more satisfying to blow her to pieces and save Lebedev.  A 20mm rifle grenade does the trick nicely.  That said, it is possible to go through the game without killing either of them (Navarre kills Lebedev, and you simply sprint past Navarre every time she shows up).

What always annoyed me was that if you go the back way into Castle Clinton and zap everyone with your stun gun but exit through the front to Navarre, it still counts as a bloodbath to Carter.  Frustrating as hell.

Oh, if you haven't before, stun a MiB sometime - it is possible to knock them out and loot their inventories.

Recently found the self-destruct toggle in Mechwarrior 3. The hard way.

Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

You can mount a LAM on the side of the bed facing her, before talking to Lebedev. That vaporizes her instantly when she enters the room, but the explosion cannot pass through level geometry, so it doesn't hurt Lebedev or you at all. :D

You must have found something that I passed over then. As far as I know, the first 20mm pack you find is in the MJ12 guard post in Maggie Chow's house, which comes well after that part.

Re: Games that still surprise
Not to mention she has the only nano key to exit UNATCO after the MJ12 breakout ? I tried to get her with the riot prod but she seemed invulnerable to it.

Saved Lebedev. Be interesting to see if/where he turns up. Presumeably either Simons will do him in or he'll end up at Tong's gaffe.

Re: Games that still surprise
Dwarf Fortress constantly surprises me with its level of detail.

Recently a child in my 80 strong Fortress became possessed and couldn't find the materials to build his artifact for nearly a season. He kept whispering about needing leather although the place was flooded with the stuff. I looked at the kids description and noticed that he likes cats. Ironically it meant he that needed cat leather for his items. Hoping to save the childs mind from being fried by an angry spirit I ordered a fresh litter of kittens to be slaughtered before they can hijack a dwarf as an owner(they choose their own keepers and cannot be butcherer once they do).

I managed to give him the stuff just in the nick of time before he would inevitably go insane. The resulting artifact was awesome however. It was an amulet decorated with shell and leather with images of one of my champions striking down a goblin. When i checked their names it turned out that it was a goblin snatcher that nearly got away with the child I mentioned earlier.

And for me Deus Ex would never be the same(not hilarious) after i discovered the anti walkthrough. http://www.it-he.org/

I'm not that much on helicopter sims, Apache Longbow was the last one I played. I haven't played any of Enemy Engaged series.

Just a sidenote, multiplaying Falcon AF also opens a new world. We tried our first campaign mission today, and man the first hours of the war were insanely chaotic, going up and bombing something resulted in a total clusterf**k. There is no substitute for that "What the **** is going on around here?!?!" -feeling, Falcon 4 is the only sim which can continously reproduce that kind of immersion.

Imagine getting bombarded with radiomessages coming from all computer controlled friendly aircraft (about 100 in air, all assigned to do different stuff), but in addition now your human wingmen blabber on top of that with TeamSpeak. Your radar warning receiver shows enemy air and ground radars active on the whole frontal hemisphere. Your own radar picks up tens of contacts in front of you, some of them friendly, most of them not, missile release cues and cries of help being yelled to radio all the time. SAM smoketrails are piercing cloud cover, representing totally apocalyptic scenery from a far, like there would be a huge white tentacled moster sitting on the ground, trying to catch airplanes! And it was AWESOME!

In the end, it was a mission failed for the whole package, but man it was fun! As a wingleader I managed to down 4 before that telephonepole sized SA-2 finally got me. If you ever get Allied Force, feel free to contact me about it any time. It does take about 2 months of training to start single player campaign, multiplayer would be good to start after several single player campaigns completed. Playing through a single campaign takes about 2 weeks of 2-3 hour flying / day, depending on how often you want to fly yourself.
