How well can your pc handle Freespace?
It's 2009 and we are all still playing a game released in 1999-2000. But with the new shiny upgrades the game still looks awesome.
So i'm running this game on a GF8800GTX&E6600 (My pc was state of the art 2 years ago and I must say, it still performs just fine with the latest games) without any trouble even in absurd self created BoE Fred disasters where 12 huge capships slug it out and 80 fighters run amok. 1024x786 with all the graphical goodies on.
So my question to you all is (the thread title might contain spoilers) how much can your pc handle? Does it choke when it sees the collosus? Or can it handle 100 crazy effects on screen without breaking a sweat? I'm interested cause I have these crazy epic illusions about making a campaign myself and I'm afraid I might go overboard with effects that my pc might handle but will murder lesser pc's.

(P.s. Can I get a 'welcome to HLPBB' pic too? I feel left out  :P )

I don't use adv media vps and I toggle on compressed images, but I still have to toggle down detail on some user made campaigns.

Maxed out on the benchmark missions. Never seen it drop.

May I ask what kind of processor/video card you have?

Not very well at all. My integrated card doesn't like games. At least it runs *mumble mumble Portal mumble mumble*.

Maybe I should make a thread where all the integrated users on this forum get together to improve matters.

And my brother has an 8800. And he doesn't even play games nowadays!

I'm thinking murder might be a possible solution here...  :nervous:

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
The game in general runs quite smoothly, but I have noticed that the game does slow down when running a debug build whenever I'm looking at something really big, like a Juggernaught.

Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

Not very well.  I can't use the 3.6.10 VPs without crashing my Display driver.  So I tried to resort to 3.6.9 but that's rendered most of the campaigns with Turey's installer unloadable and I don't get any VPs.  Last time I buy an entry level computer.
I reject your reality and substitute my own, hence my existance on the Galatea!

Running Leopard 10.5.6 with a 2.5ghz Intel core 2 duo and 2gb RAM. Video card is Geforce 8600M GT with 512mb of ram.

If I use the MediaVPs, I have to set my model detail and 3d hardware details on second or third lowest, depending on the mission.  :(

If I'm using the mediaVPs and happen to face something like an Orion as it blows up, dear god...

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
running an acer 9410 laptop 1.6ghz dual core cpu and a nvidia 7300 gpu (running forceware driver), screen 1440x900, windows xp 32bit 4gb ram

i run with every thing on max but no v-sync , but have had to overclock my gpu (rivatuner), standard 350gpu/300memory now at 490gpu/850memory
every thing runs fine floating between 28fps (heavy detail, huge explosions ) and 120fps (empty space ) but on average turning at 55-60fps graphics card runs at about 10-15 degress hotter after a few hours of play ( but still within safe limits and i have no crashes )

this is on all parts of fs and babylon project , silent threat reborn and blue planet are the same , but i know it wont be long before i have to change my laptop with all the developement going on here .....;

Anyway, my computer is able to run 3610 just fine with it's AMD Athlon X2 4600+, 2 gig's of memory, 32bitwindows and it's 8600GT Nvidea card.

I wish I could say the same for Planescape:TOrment. I have to practicly turn off hte graphics card in order for that game to work properly (which is completely worth the effort, but yeah...)

If FSO runs only on one core for dual-core machines, does that mean freespace is only getting half the CPU power it may need?

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
4 GB DDR2-RAM (though only ~3 GB are usable due to 32-bit OS but whatever...)
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC

Running on 1680x1050 resolution, I can use everything that the community has to offer... plus some of my more insane contraptions like a 4096^2 mipmapped starfield so that I can use smaller fields of view without blurring the starfield. :p

It gets better though, for I am capable of maintaining generally playable (+30) frame rates with 32xAA (anti-aliasing), 16xAF and optimizations aka quality degraders turned all off. With 8xAA, the frame rates usually stay well above the hardware limitation of 60 FPS which is the highest my screen can do. The only problem I have is the insidious thruster trail flecks if I use anti-aliasing.

Sololop: Yes, when it runs on one core it's only using half of the processor's computational capacity. However, actually getting advantage from multiple cores requires the program to be designed for threaded computation and FS2_Open... is not. And will very very likely never be either. Most programs still aren't. The benefit from multi-core processors is at the moment mostly that you can run two CPU-intensive programs much better than on single core, and applications using single core are less likely to jam the whole system if the application hangs since the other core is free to operate system requests (or something like that).

Moreover I would say FS2_Open doesn't really need to be ever optimized for multiple cores either, because the power of individual cores is very well enough to run the game smoothly, it's the graphics renderer (and memory in older PC's) that become bottlenecks to cause FPS drops. And converting the game to use threaded processing would be... unrealistic endeavour that would likely end up in violence. :p

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
The ONLY slowdown I ever got was with the FSPort Media VPs playing ST:R Mission 3. I blame the uber-high polycount Lokis, though VA assures me it's the collision detection that's slowing things down.

Hurrah, I feel welcome now  ;)

@Sololop
Seems odd to me that with your setup you are experiencing that much slowdown.

Most people here seem to be able to run the game with max smoothly, a few can run it decently and quite a bit of folk seem to have pc that can hardly keep up with the game.

Works well for me (except for a couple of things, like lots of asteroids.) But with the new mediavps, everything looks sooooooo much better (and runs the computer harder.)
Do or do not, there is no try...

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
Athlon 1.25ghz chip, 512mb SDRAM (133mhz), 128mb Geforce 5200 AGP. It runs, with MVComplete.vp (which includes the advanced effects etc. I believe). It generally runs 40-60fps a majority of the time, dropping to approximately 9-10 fps, during high action missions but only for short periods).

This rig shouldn't be able to run it at all really. But it does!  :D

3.4Mhz Intel P4 Extreme : P900 800Mhz Board : 2GB PC3200 : MSI NVIDIA Fanless 8600GTS 256MB DDR3 :  Hi everyone - Im brand new to your community . I have not seen any hesitation in game play yet - working my way right from the start using the FSport - fsopen 3.6.10 , Freespace the great War ! considering buying a projector to see how long it takes me to be motion sick when the room is spinning round round!  Ive had the original FS2 disk set for 10 years and never played it - what the hell have I been missing out on? 10 years ago this game and its multiplayer options was so ahead of its time - are you sure the Vasudans didnt program it? : One point I would definatley make -  FSopen has to be explained easier Non techincal PC users - Gamers - would be put trying to install the game as the current set up is too complicated. Basically there are too many internet pages refering to the growth of the game and too many outdated installation techniques. ... just a new eyes in perspective. ... give me a couple of weeks and hopefully we will meet in the new multiplayer zone ---- .. can anyonwe tell me .. if the option to be an obverver works and when games are likely to be played?

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
i can run it rather well on both pc. one is a phenom 9500 quad core, 4 gigs ram, geforce 9600GT. brutal overkill for fs.

the lappy is turion x64 X2, 4gigs, ati 3650.

TAP test builds kill both platforms :p
