Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
Intel P4 3.0 GHz with 512 MB of RAM (*sigh*) and an ATI Radeon X300 64 MB card (*heavier sigh*) here.  When I used to foolishly attempt to run AdvEffects, my system would be reduced to several seconds per frame in some of the more ridiculous moments, but I still probably managed around 20-30 FPS in most circumstances.  The last MediaVP release seems to have finally put the advanced stuff well out of my reach...which is actually beneficial for me in the long run, since without stubbornly trying to run it, I generally experience a much smoother framerate, even with most of the bells and whistles activated.  If, as I plan to do, I wind up taking the memory up to 3 GB and getting a semi-decent video card in here, I'm sure I'd be able to handle even AdvEffects without any really horrendous slowdowns.

@kingcayman, Playing FS on a projector... That would be epic. I believe most multiplayer games are played Saturday night. And yeah, there is a few threads giving different instructions to install FSO, but they all should work anyhow.

@spoon, I know. I initially thought the game would run quite smoothly. However, it does not. I think it would run better if I just had another gig of RAM, because Leopard itself may use a lot of resources. Still learning how to tweak macs. Starting to think you can't though...

3.4Mhz Intel P4 Extreme : P900 800Mhz Board : 2GB PC3200 : MSI NVIDIA Fanless 8600GTS 256MB DDR3 :  Hi everyone - Im brand new to your community . I have not seen any hesitation in game play yet - working my way right from the start using the FSport - fsopen 3.6.10 , Freespace the great War ! considering buying a projector to see how long it takes me to be motion sick when the room is spinning round round!  Ive had the original FS2 disk set for 10 years and never played it - what the hell have I been missing out on? 10 years ago this game and its multiplayer options was so ahead of its time - are you sure the Vasudans didnt program it? : One point I would definatley make -  FSopen has to be explained easier Non techincal PC users - Gamers - would be put trying to install the game as the current set up is too complicated. Basically there are too many internet pages refering to the growth of the game and too many outdated installation techniques. ... just a new eyes in perspective. ... give me a couple of weeks and hopefully we will meet in the new multiplayer zone ---- .. can anyonwe tell me .. if the option to be an obverver works and when games are likely to be played?

For now use Turey's Installer,

http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_fs2_open

and i'll get back to you with more detailed information after school.

Same here, except unfortunately laptops aren't really upgrade-friendly or towards games in general . . . hopefully a new computer would be coming along next year if things go as planned.

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
Well... you do have a graphics processing unit (GPU), even if you don't have a dedicated GPU (also called a graphics card). Lobo's point was that you might have some success with new/most recent drivers for your integrated graphics processing unit, since it might enable the required amount of OpenGL support for it.

Then again, it might not. Posting the specs of your IGP (integrated graphics processor) might help to make that distinction between "no hope" and "with luck you might be able to run it... poorly".
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

no, there's no hope. The hope is that my super-computerswitchedonguy of a big brother comes over soon and he will have it all done and fixed before I've blinked by eyes and said "What, there's a fan on there?"

Mine can't even play Freespace. I have to wait till I get a card that ISN'T an Intel Integrated. And has more than 16 MB of video memory.

You should at least be able to play retail?

Something about my graphics card gives Freespace 2 heart cancer. It keels over as soon as I start it.

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
I run Freespace on a relatively recent iMac with the MediaVPs and all detail settings cranked to eleven.  It is glorious.

A question for high end users: if the frame rate never tanks, how can you tell when you're having fun?

Myself, 3.6.10 builds of any kind always result in a crash ingame for some reason - even without mediavps. 3.6.9 builds are my friends.

Playing in D3D then? As D3D was removed from 3.6.10 an Intel Intergrated chips have very little (if any) support for OpenGL

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
Some Intel chips have had newer drivers released on them. Drivers that actually make OpenGL work. But it doesn't apply to nearly all of Intel graphics cards.

Running FSO with MediaVPs drives my 2.6ghz Intel Core 2 Duo to 100% CPU usage majority of the time... :doubt:

You mean 50%.  Only one core is used.

Re: How well can your pc handle Freespace?
True. But Activity Monitor states 100%. It doesn't give individual cores. And the fact that it shows 100%(Okay, 90-100%) is odd. Now that I think about it, if one core is being used 100%, and the other core is just handling things such as the OS, and maybe my Browser, it should total to nothing more than 60%, as when I'm idle on the desktop cpu usage is usually around 2-5%.
