[20:01]   <Androgeos>   So 3D Realms is gone. Pretty sudden.

[20:04]   <Androgeos>   You would think that, if they were shutting down, they would crash and burn instead of just puffing out like a lighted matchstick on a windy day.

But...but now what will we use as a reference point for "it'll never happen"?  I feel so...lost. :(

This is an interesting read, really hope it isn't actually true: http://gamingisstupid.com/2009/05/06/the-chair-story-revival/

Makes fun reading though.

This really blows, especially since they were actually making progress with DNF, and after seeing the trailer a couple years ago or so I was really looking forward to it.

Guardian newspaper games writer Steve Boxer said it was astonishing 3D Realms had not finished the game after more than a decade of development.

"It would have been nice to see another Duke Nukem game, but given they had more than 12 years it's just incompetence of the highest order.

"3D Realms made some great games in the past, but they got overtaken by the 21st Century.

"Sadly, Duke Nukem Forever was the most aptly named title in the history of games. Now, it's just Duke Nukem Never."

Lame, but true.    :hopping: :hopping:

In a posting on Twitter, Apogee Software said it was "officially not affected by the situation at 3DRealms".

"Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned and further announcements about upcoming games will be made in the near future," the statement added.

I thought Apogee was 3d realms??????
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Heh.  Actually, BWO is in fairly decent shape.

This made me think of something.  Of all the major campaigns that claimed they would be released before DNF concluded development, ST:R is the only one for which that claim holds true. :D

Well, you need to start it, at the very least.  First in FS1, before you scrap everything and move to retail FS2, before you scrap everything again and start it in an old FSO build, before you scrap it all again and move to a newer FSO build....  Since your self-imposed gag order will prevent you from engaging in any kind of human interaction, you'll have to stay in your home, until the project is finished, so by the time you realize it's time to cancel the stupid thing, you'll have been declared legally dead.

Re: Duke Nukem Never....
Well, not many people are pressing for JAD4Ever, Axem. Most of us are just waiting ever so patiently to see if it can get through the fire and the flames of procrastination and feature creeping.

Re: Duke Nukem Never....
This is what I cant understand, 12 years doing nothing, how can they not have closed sooner? Do the people paying these guys like to throw money away? Look, if a game is taking more than 6 years to get done then something is wrong but 12? Then you know they just arent giving a damn.

I don't think the problem was people not giving a damn so much as people giving entirely too much of a damn about things they should have let be considered final.

Re: Duke Nukem Never....
As has been mentioned before, this is the other end of the scale, most developers suffer because they are faced with time limits that mean they have to rush the project, and produce an under-par offering, in this case, there was too much time and feature creep, combined with an obsession with getting everything 'perfect' without even being certain what the standards for 'perfect' were did the damage.

I doubt we have heard the full story of 3DRealms going down yet.

Also, the chair story appears to be fiction, or actually an answer to rumors that spread around back then about Duke Nukem being conspiracy theory. Unfortunately, the sarcastic notes around the quote have been left out.

Re: Duke Nukem Never....
I'm thinking along the lines of Flipside. After being in development for over a decade, you can't help but wonder if DNF was deliberately being held in development so that it can become the most modern game ever made (which is impossible given the increasing levels of realism every couple of years or so).

A few days ago, I was watching the 2001 DNF trailer on YouTube, and some of the users who commented said that the 2001 incarnation would still be a match for GTA4 despite it being dated.

After 12 years they should have realised that most of their fans who still play computer games are now retro fans who don't care much about graphics anyway and just released the damn thing. :p

Re: Duke Nukem Never....
Indeed. Duke Nukem is a lot like Metal Slug. Both games simply involve lots of stuff blowing up, lots of violence (animated in DN, cartoon in MS) and many shout-outs and catch phrases ("That's one DOOMed space marine" and "I ain't afraid of no Quake" in DN and stock screams and "MISSION ALL OVER!" in MS as examples).

I honestly felt that DNF in 2001 was amazing enough for it to be released, and yeah, most of Duke's fans grew up in that era where the sound system was crap and game graphics were even crappier. I spent most of my childhood playing the slightly better stuff (which explains why I use DOSBox).

I remember seeing the trailer and wonder "why dont these guys release it?" Dated graphics don't matter as much when gameplay is totally awesome.
