First of all, you should get the 3.6.10 RC2 build. Then you will need to get OpenAL and install it.

Make sure to get 3.6.10RC2 from my sig, and the Launcher 5.5d. Plop them into your FS directory and select the 3.6.10RC2 file (not the debug version) with the launcher.

Make sure you get the MediaVPs from the thread on the upgrade forum, the ones the installer downloads are corrupted.

But even when I install fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 and run it, I get the same error.

Okay, open is installed, graphics are admittedly worse, but I have not installed the aforementioned beautification files.

I had the installer give me some new campaigns but they are not showing up... What am I doing wrong now?

Did you select them in the "MOD" tab? Make sure you set the ingame graphics settings, as well as the ones in the launcher. Always run the launcher as opposed to the executable. Download the fixed MediaVPS, and replace the contents of the MediaVPs folder with them.

Alright, but now it says that it cannot find thirteen ship types when I try to play the awakening campaign.

Also, can I run multiple mods at once?

Yes. And you must. Awakenings requires FSPort.

Also, are you sure you've selected the Awakenings campaign? Selecting the mod from the Launcher is not enough; you must also select the correct campaign from the in-game Campaign Room.

As I always say: the Installer reduces the thinking part of the whole installation procedure, which is not necessarily a good thing.

Check that link I posted about using several mods, at Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ. It describes how to create mod.ini files and what their purpose is. Try to understand it and then use this new knowledge to get your Awakenings working. If you succeed in it, you'll learn an important part about FSO. If not, ask for further help.

Sorry, but I have no clue as to what they are telling me to do. The launcher only lets me select one mod at a time, but your link says that I need to run first one mod, then another.

After I run a mod does it stay there? Because if not, I must be an idiot.

Also, I got the graphics update to work... kind of...
The details in capitol ships were better, the environment was better, and the explosives and missile launches were better.

However, I can across four problems.
The first problem was that I had to get a certain distance from the ship for the graphics to kick in. This is probably a hardware problem since I have a laptop with integrated graphics...

My second problem was my engine power could not be altered half way into the mission. The power just dropped from the "E" and I could not modify it, even by reducing power from the guns or shields. No subsystem was damaged.

My third problem was the primary weapon only had one color laser- a narrow blue beam. I always equip myself with two different types of primary, and both the prometheus and the default cannon which usually show as green and red, and different shaped beams, both had the same graphic when I fired them. The speed of both cannons were not altered.

My fourth and largest problem is that now all fighters and bombers are pyramids, trapezoids, or in the case of the manicore- A "V" shape inside of a [_] shape. Sometimes they have the same model as they are supposed to, when I look at them from above, but they are less detailed than normal.

You're probably not going to be able to use the MediaVPs with integrated graphics, I'm afraid. They require a fairly modern computer.

Multimod in a nutshell means that if
- you select a mod folder with the Launcher
- that mod folder contains a mod.ini file with a reference to another mod folder

you'll get two mods. The mod.ini can also contain references to many mod folders, not just one. This is handy if you want to run Awakenings that needs the FSPort, but also handy if you want to squeeze the MediaVPs in as well.

You should check your in-game settings (start the game, then go to the settings screen). From the top of my hat, I can't remember all the options listed there, but basically if the settings are low enough, the threshold for using lower-detal LODs for ship models is lower, effectively meaning that you indeed see flying pyramids and such even from a relatively short distance.

That's... weird. I have no idea why or how that would happen.

This might be related to the same in-game settings as problems #1 and #4. Or it might not.

Tell you what. Open the "Troubleshooting FAQ" link in my signature. Scroll down to the end, read the "Your fs2_open.log" part and follow its instructions using fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3-debug. When you're done, post the fs2_open.log file here.

Right, I've decided to toss out everything and start over. I did however, manage to earn a nice selection of medals. Where is the pilot's record kept?
