One of my coworkers was in the Navy and knew a few Hornet drivers, funny enough in gun only dogfight exercises the humble A-10 is the most hated opponent.  Not simply because the GUA-8 can out shoot any other aircraft born weapon, but because no other fighter has a tighter turning circle then the Hog.  A proper fighter jet can't keep the thing out in front.

However, the maneuverability of the A-10 comes as no surprise. It does what it was designed to do far better than any other aircraft in service - don't let anyone fool you otherwise.

The pilots call themselves drivers in US Air Force. Go figure.

Except in the Navy they are called naval aviators instead of pilots, although I don't know if they use the term "driver" for themselves as well.

Sometimes. It depends on who you ask. A single-seater guy is more likely to call himself a pilot.

I've always admired the A-10, even though I'm not an American. It truly is one of the greatest aircraft in the world.

I thought they were  in the middle of two major upgrades right now that are slated to keep them operational till 2028.

Considering the Army raises hell every time the USAAF considers putting them to pasture and the fact every time a war comes along they perform in an exemplary fashion I'm curious where you heard they are going to be retired.

Besides when Skynet takes over the world we are going to need them to bust up giant robots.
