Guess I'm a bit late, but eh. Generally, I let bugs live... unless they are poisonous or parasitic. I'm somewhat allergic to biting insects, so there is no mercy for their kind, particularly in the case of a nest on my house. Otherwise, shooing is in order.

Fun fact (as opposed to being a douchebag and correcting you) we all are allergic to bug bites, an allergy is an over reaction to a chemical introduced into the body. The ones who aren't allergic are the exception, not the norm.

I'm impressed Obama had the hand speed to catch the fly. I can barely kill one without a swatter. Mosquitoes are easier to kill with bare hands. I bet he'd always be the first guy to buzz in on quiz shows or something.

Actually, perhaps the fly was 'stuned'. Happens rarely, but sometimes they fly slower and they're easier to catch.

Speaking of that. I don't see any reason to let a bug go unless killing or catching it is messier and more trouble than letting it fly out by opening the door. I sometimes thoroughly enjoy bug hunting, like sometimes waiting next to a garbage container outside and using a fly swatter on each one that lands. You could make a game out of it. Fat (pregnant) flies are worth 5 points while small ones are worthy 1. I don't make points out of it but one could do that. It is also fun to cut slugs with scissors or clippers. I recall putting a praymantis on my train set when I was about 8 and putting a lighter below a fly and spider a few times.

I'm all for killing the pesky sorts of bugs and all, but I feel like some of this borders on cruelty, sentience or not.  Spiders are all about killing the more loathsome forms of vermin, so if they're not two inches long and getting right in my face, I try to leave them alone.  And mantises...they're just awesome, and again, they're all about killing other bugs.  Annoying critters like gnats and mosquitoes are one thing, but I'd rather enlist the help of the things that prey on them than shoot myself in the foot by bringing my foot down on them.

Noooo... Have you seriously looked into PETA at all? THere have ben instances in which the higher-ups (Read: The President of PETA) have vindicated the firebombing of facilities dedicated to animal testing.
