Beyond the Binary system
Into the Lion's Den is my favorite mission in the whole vanilla campaign. You get 15 minutes to blow **** up. And there's something I've been wondering; what's behind that third Knossos portal? I'm thinking that it could possibly be some kind of empty system, or maybe the very edge of Shivan space.

The reason I think this is because it took days, or even months for all of the Sathani to make their way to the Binary system from initial contact. Or possibly the 80 Sathani were fleeing from that system, carrying with them their precious few remaining ships, after some cataclysmic defeat that caused this branch of Shivans to pack up and GTFO.

I highly doubt that the GTVA is the only force fighting the Shivans, and I think it is entirely plausible that some other species gave the Sathanas fleet a good kick in the groin, and destroying Capella was their escape route.

Of course, I've been gone for a while, so this theory might have already been put out there.

Re: Beyond the Binary system
Since that's where the Shivans seem to have come from, it heads deeper into Shivan space.

You'll fly there in the ASW.

We can't know, quite simply. Unless, perhaps, you wanted to cruise over to that Knossos and jump through  :nervous:. Wouldn't it be grand if there were something secret hidden back there?

I don't think you can travel 150 000 m in fifteen minutes, even in a Mara.

[callsign] was killed in a collision with Alpha 1. I learnt that after trying to afterburn towards the Shivan juggernauts hanging around Capella in that sathstar bitmap.

So...when command self-destructs you for desertion, it's because you collide with yourself. lol.

Re: Beyond the Binary system
So, is that what the game was supposed to do, or is that a physics-related bug that the "stray" warnings from command were designed to get you not to run into?

You also get that message when you kill yourself using cheats.

Re: Beyond the Binary system
Why doesn't it just say you killed yourself?

In FS1 it did (although I can't remember exactly what I was doing, it might have been a collision, or it might have been firing hornets into the back of a Basilisk at point blank range with no shields). Er... dunno about with cheats though.

Well, it does say if you kill yourself with your own missiles.

Ah, okay then.

I would've made it force-jump you or something. Like, Command sends a remote override to make your fighter return to base.

Re: Beyond the Binary system
FS2 was meant to have slightly humourous bits if you didn't do what any normal gamer would. Such as reading the text on ships and weapons (math is cool; guaranteed to blow anything up!) or flying away for a stupidly long distance.

In the command briefing anis. I'm not sure which way around it was, but I think it was so that FS1 had all these "Math is cool" sort of things, and FS2 had plain gibberish.

There were also some weird comments at the beginning of some of the FS1 mission files, like "I am the lizard king!" etc.
Edit: As seen here.

Heh, where?

I've seen "Math is cool" in the Colossus cutscene. Look closely at the description labels surrounding the schematic of the ship.
