Star Dragon; please read this. :)

Anyway, THQ is the publishing company that now owns :v:... Because THQ and Interplay are (ummm, were) rivals, THQ would probably never get the rights for FS off them. Or something like that. Man, I'm beginning to forget the story - it's been so long since someone's asked. :)

The true goal of a game designer should be to continually challenge themselves as to what they have, how they can improve it, and what the public expects... Fail to do this, and you won't sell your product. (Ramble alert)...

WC1 and 2 are some of the best space combat games ever. And after more than 10 years their graphics are still very good. You're just spoiled because of WC3.
Besides, you're insulting the game that's the grandparent of FS (X-Wing/Tie-fighter is the other one) and that made soundcards important.

WC4: that one is ambivalent. Yes they changed the graphics but the storyline is quite good. Very much a change from the previous games.

And if you only play a game for it's graphics then that's sad. Gameplay first, then the rest.
It came from outer space! What? Dunno, but it's going back on the next flight!

Wait a minute... replace how? Sorry to break it to you, guys, but FreeSpace has been defunct for almost a decade now. The new batch of gamers don't even know what it is (granted, they don't know what anything is- kids honestly do seem to get dumber and dumber every generation). There's no "replacing" to be done except that which has been taken care of by pretty much all the fighter sims to have come since FreeSpace. End of story.

If you mean as far as gaming itself goes, they share only some very basic aspects. FreeLancer is much closer to Elite and Escape Velocity than it is to FreeSpace- if anything, I-War 2 replaced FS there, even though EoC was a marketing bomb. It had far superior graphics (no ****), better plotline than FS2 (both plots sucked ass, frankly, but EoC's had pirates), and what is generally considered a better flight model- and I'd agree if I wasn't so wierded out that I was a god at combat in the original and hated it in the sequel. It was highly linear, though you could go off and steal stuff to your heart's content, and had all the weapons and toys you could find in FS and more.

Of course, on the other hand, one of them I can't abide whereas the other... well, I'm here, aren't I?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
