Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me specifically what you did.

Thanks.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)

Protip: Upgrade to 3.6.12 Executable.

Code: [Select]
/Users/08yeungm1/Entertainment/FreeSpace2/data/music/mv_music.vp'

That doesn't belong there. All VP files (other than the main FS2 VP's or the OGG Cutscenes) should be in a "MOD" folder. That particular one belongs in the "MediaVPs" mod folder, please relocate it. If it's the ONLY VP you want to use, then put in a "MV_Music" folder and add it as a MOD in your command line.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
Uhh, Zacam, that post was from two years ago. I doubt he can hear you :P

Anyway, regarding the actual problem.

gdiz: You need to run the Launcher (Soulstorm's FSO launcher for OSX, linked to in the 3.6.12 release thread here, and make all the settings for FSO.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)

Oh ffs...well, at least anybody reading will know not to do that then.

gdiz: Good job in searching up a post that exampled the same problem you were having. Plus points for that. For future reference though, start a new one with a link back to the original found thread if it's older than 6 months.

Prevents accidents like what I just did from happening because I didn't look at the original post date. I thought it was odd that the build was 3.6.10, but that's actually not uncommon.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
Ok, my fault on that.  In doing further research, I wanted to make sure I understand what was going on.  So, if you don't mind, I am going to continue the thread.  I can start a new thread if necessary though.

I just came across free space 2, and found the .jar downloader.  So forgive me if my questions are things I should already know.

In reading on the website, I came across something that said I must purchase the original commercial version of free space 2 (GOG something or other).  Is that accurate?  If so, that is fine, but I think I was under the misapprehension that the launcher in and of itself would be enough to launch the game.

The other thing is that I gather that I am supposed to point the launcher towards certain files.  Does FSO refer to the actual executable within the contents of the .app package of the launcher or does that refer to something else?  Also, along with that, how do I go about pointing the launcher at something different?  I went looking for a plaintext config file or something similar with no success.

I went and found the beginners guide to getting started.  I think I might require something more fundamental.  Thanks for the help you have already provided and for any help in the future.

You will indeed need to purchase the original game from GoodOldGames.com. It's only $6.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
So, I want to make sure I understand this correctly.

I buy the game, which I understand starts out as a PC game.

Then after I buy the game, I either get it working via wine or parallels or something like that.  The other option, and one that I would definitely prefer, is to pull a couple files out of the package (if that is accurate, does anyone know which files?).

Then after that, I get the os x launcher to point at those files in some way.  Is there any where that I could find a guide to altering or setting up the launcher?

Thanks!

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
The big obstacle will just be getting any .exe-based installer to run. If you have a Windows anything, install the game there, then copy the entire FreeSpace 2 folder over to your Mac partition.

Then run the FreeSpace Open Installer (jar version), then download WXLauncher (you can google it to find the release thread), use that to select 3.6.12 Release (not debug), pick your mod, configure your options, enjoy the game.

OK.  That doesn't sound too bad.  Thanks for the info.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
but I think I was under the misapprehension that the launcher in and of itself would be enough to launch the game.
Some vocabulary:
- Launcher - a little tool for setting your FSO options.
- FSO - also known as FS2O, FreeSpace Open, FreeSpace 2 Open etc. The improved open-source version of the FS2 game engine.
- FSO Installer - an online Installer originally created by Turey. Downloads necessary FSO components and even some user-made campaigns, but naturally will not download FS2, because that would be illegal.

Re: Can't open application (Mac OS X)
Thank you once again for all your help, everyone.  Here is the problem that I'm hitting now.  I went to look at the wxlauncher.  From what I can see, there is a linux release and a windows release.  It's looking like the option to use wxlauncher on os x is to build it myself.  Is that the easiest way or is there something that is prebuilt for os x?

Sadly, building wxLauncher is the only choice, there is no pre-built release for OSX at this time.  Solely because as far as I know, wxLauncher is not capable of actually running FSO, I know wxLauncher runs and compiles on OSX and it can configure FSO, but it cannot actually get the engine to run so it is unable to load the flag file nor can it actually start the game.

It is likely a very simple tweak to the source code to make it happen, but as I don't have a mac, I can't actually fiddle with it to fix it.  If you get it to work or know a OSX dev that was/is able to get it to work please let me know.
