How hard would it be to make a ground based mission? Would it soak up so many polys you'll be on 1 frame per minute or it'll play alright?

Nuke has already experimented with terrain models, but not for a ground based mission.

Re: Are GoG partners with V/InterPlay or wadever?
You mean ground based as in a tank or a soldier or something? Or ground based as in in an atmosphere, like a normal flight sim. If it's the former, it's technically doable now, though quite limited, and if it;s the latter then that's already been done independently at least three or four times, and it plays alright, with no major lag issues.

Re: Are GoG partners with V/InterPlay or wadever?
It's doable and already done by a few mods.
The only released one is TBP, but you will also be able to fly in atmosphere for example in 158th Banshee Squadron and Shadows of Lyat.
Also, Nuke is working on atmospheric scripts and surface models.

I would love to see FS3 and don't get how it would kill current projects.  There just stories and whatnot. It's hardly like the Canon Police are going to come through and shut up shop and tell the community what they can't do.

@wistler: It'd kill the feeling off "Hmm, I'm gonna play Blue Planet know and see what interesting stuff they came up with, oh, and then I'll check the explanations of ED... and maybe, and maybe a little luck into INFSCP won't hurt..." And then you can come up with your own theories.

It'd be nice to know the whole story... but it's nice to not know it too

Re: Are GoG partners with V/InterPlay or wadever?
I still don't see how that sentiment really holds up.  The seven-mission Destiny of Peace campaign for FS1 described a scenario that flat-out didn't happen according to the canon Reconstruction era timeline...but does that stop anyone now from playing and enjoying it?  Or how about Blaise Russel's Shrouding the Light, which he released well after FS2 was created to much interest and acclaim.  Finding out what :v: sees as the official storyline continuation doesn't make fan interpretations of the period after FS2 based on what we know right now any less valid, nor would it diminish my interest in these projects in the least.

You know, if they snuck into our community, toyed around with all the cool stuff we've done, and behind the scenes created a badass 'official' campaign to tie up all the loose ends, that would be sweet.  But of course that wouldn't help them monetarily so don't hold your breath.

I like this idea. It's completely unlikely that it would ever happen, but the thought is pretty cool...

And honestly, I think it's the only way we might ever see FS3 come to life. Even if many of the fans here--and maybe the :v: crew too--want it to be a commercial release, it'd be hard for the dev team to go to THQ (or Interplay or whoever) and justify making a sequel to a game that was released in 1999.
"Uh, yeah, I mean it's tough to say, woulda-coulda-shoulda, ifs and buts like candy and nuts, you know, you never know.  This, that, and the other thing.  Who knows?  You know, there are a lot of what-ifs.  You know, my whole life is a lot of what-ifs."

Yeah, justifying a sequel to a really old game....never happens (fallout 3). Idk the business behind fallout 3 becoming a game, but it is a sequel to a really old set of games.

I agree . . .
Did Doom3 kill Doom2 modding? No. So why would FS3 kill FS2 modding.
I think it would largely depend on how good the FS3 engine was, and how moddable it was.

If hypothetically I find a timer and slide into a universe ruled by sense and reason where said game is nearing release. .
I'd hope it:d be the same leap as half-life 2 was from the first.

Not true. Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3 both came out 8 years after their respective previous installments. Starcraft 2 is supposed to come out in 2010 and it's the sequel to a 1998 game. (To be fair, Starcraft was one of the best-selling games of all time and is played in professional leagues to this day.)

Is there anybody from Violation/interplay around here?

ROFL, if you couldn't detect my sarcasm and the hypocriticality i slipped into my statement. Then you don't know that you're actually agreeing with me.
