Re: Signature sizes are now enforced on the forums
Sigs on/off is a profile option - could sig scrolling not have an option as well? I mean if not I can live with it, but it is annoying. Keep in mind I've never complained in the slightest about any other change or aspect of the forums in the past seven years I've been coming here, so it's not like I'm just an unpleasable whinger. :p

Re: Signature sizes are now enforced on the forums
Sorry no can do. There are no mods available for SMF 1.1 which would add such an option. I don't know about future versions of SMF 2.0, but RC1 does not have any more user selectable signature options either.

This signature limit wasn't done by a mod however, but by simply editing style.css. To make it user selectable, we would have to enable user selectable forum themes and make a copy of the HLP theme without this sig limit. Unfortunately SMF 1.1 does not allow admins to choose which themes can be selected by users. However, such an option is found in SMF 2.0, which for the record does not mean the admins will bother with maintaining multiple themes...

In the end, I prefer a solution which results in least amount of complaints. Compared to the amount of complaints I receive about some tard having sigs the lenght of Boeing  B-29 Superfortress, scrollbars wins by a mile ...so far.

Re: Signature sizes are now enforced on the forums
A scroll bar would be less likely to influence people to shorten their sig that just cutting it off. I guess if you want people to shorten them, it's one way. If you don't mind it's the other. Right?

Re: Signature sizes are now enforced on the forums
Yes that is true indeed. But resolution becomes a big problem unless width is limited too. Then we'd be back to 468x60 (or somewhere close) limit, which annoyed even more people (including admins...) than scrollbars.

Yea the scroll bars are no more dangerous then code blocks.  I learned a long time ago to just move the mouse to the side (keeps it out of the way of your reading too) and scroll.

I noticed that as well. Though I consider it a worthwhile exchange, it took me a moment to realise why the page wasn't moving when I rolled the mouse-wheel ;)

I wonder what takes more effort, ignoring all of the signatures, or moving your mouse to the side of the page every time you want to scroll? :p

Re: Signature sizes are now enforced on the forums
Firefox 3.5 seems to do a pretty good job of ignoring the scroll boxes if your mouse is in the middle of the page, provided you're scrolling fast enough.  It's only when you hover directly over one for a second or so that control switches to it.

From the point of view of separating post from signature on many occasions, moving the mouse is a lot easier :) Also, I find I'm using the scroll wheel less, because the page is a lot shorter than it used to be.

I'd like to second the motion that the verticle limit be increased by a small portion. Say, 10-20 pixels (whichever syncs best with the text).

Re: Changes in the forums
Topic title changed a bit so I can fit other changed stuff into this topic too.

I was bored at work so I decided to try do some optimization on HLP, mainly the forums.

Recent Posts on forum index has been disabled because it becomes increasingly ineffective in terms of sql-queries the more membergroups a forum has, and we have nearly 50. Calendar also causes some unnecessary sql-queries so it has been disabled for guests.

Also testing new caching settings that are in place for all urls that begin with (www.)hard-light.net/, does not affect subdomains. While I still had 30 minutes of work left, I began pondering whether I should hide post counts for good or not. While pondering 20 minutes had passed so I'm preparing to leave instead. :p

Edit: If you miss the Recent Posts, don't forget you still have the link "View the most recent posts on the forum." at bottom of the forum index, "Show unread posts since last visit." and "Show new replies to your posts." at top.

Any chance this could be made a profile option that is off by default?  I normally only read certain forums but in the past I have seen things that I know the answer to or am interested in the recent posts area.  The recent posts link just isn't the same.  I don't need to read the posts just the headers.

Now a link to that at the bottom of the forum I would love.

Re: Changes in the forums
Actually that and a link to reload the current page.  Usually by the time your done reading in the morning there are several new posts.  Be nice to just be able to click on Hard Light Productions Forums at the bottom the same way you can at the top.

Why don't you try the link called "Show unread posts since last visit." at top of the forum, as I suggested in last post. You might be surprised as to what page it loads. And look and behold, the link is not only available in the forum index, but in all forum pages! Also, try to click on bright red icon left to a board name. ;)

Re: Changes in the forums
I know what it does and where it is.  It would be nice to have the option at the bottom of the page so after reading the normal forums you can click on it without scrolling all the way to the top.  The messages have the Hard Light Productions Forum link (as well as the entire forum hierarchy)at the bottom but the main page doesn't.  All that is at the top.

Re: Changes in the forums
Someone always loses. Just move mouse cursor away from general vertical area of posts and scrolling is fine.

(And to other people who have the scrolling problem) If you keep your cursor in the same position, i.e. don't move it while it is hovered over the sig, then the scroll function ignores the sig scroll area. Scrolling in sigs is activated when you move the mouse in the sig area and keep it there while scrolling. So improve your mousing stillness and you will have no problem... ;)

At least, this work in Firefox Portable 3.0.6.
