the simple reason why its not spheres is becasue its damn hard to line up the little turrets on a sphere (this goes from real worl design to - they have the same problems!)

yeah, obviously, that's why they don't make sphere shaped starships in real life

Spheres are more predictable to the enemy, as no matter how you manuever the blasted thing, your profile in his targetting reticle wont change.  Meaning all he has to do is point at any part of it and shoot, which wont be that hard.  With a different design however, say a Thoth, when it rotates, its profile changes, and you have to make sure that you're still pointing at a part of it instead of open space.  May not be so hard if it only manuevers every 5 seconds, but if you're playing a TVT, whoever's flying the Thoth wont be sitting still that long, they'll be manuevering constanty.  A sphere is just not the best design ever for space combat , you even get better weapons coverage on a box.

Merry Christmas, White. ;) Here, I did something for you. :)

Simply derived from your pic, since I don't have the actual model. I was planning to do a news item... but I'm meant to be heading to sleep. But keep your eyes open - tomorrow is Friday for me, so I'll have time to make a huge-arse news post (and you all know I will). :D

You won't make me believe those are 256... no, wait, they're not even 512*512 maps, right? It just looks too good.

:jaw: You made that?! That model alone is worth downloading the whole package for!

The Babylon 5 station WIP
2 x 1024x1024 (with some space left about 2/5 of a map)
1 x 512x512
2 x 256x256
2 smaller generic maps

that the current situation

i estimate another 256 and 512 should see it fully textured (minus debris)

a lot i know - about the equivalent space of 3 1024 maps...but when you consider IFH used 2 1024 maps just for an olympus it doesnt seem quite so rediculous ....:doubt:

edit: IPAndrews model, my texturing :)
