Y'know, not to play devil's advocate, but some of us legitimately look forward to this happening every year.  I had a smile on my face for quite a bit of yesterday, anticipating seeing the forums decked out in goofy pirate speak for another year.  It's become a bit of a tradition here as far as I'm concerned.  I have always completely failed to understand why people get so up in arms about such a brief disruption of normal text.  I mean...it's a forum dedicated to a 10-year-old game.  We're not trying to solve world hunger or cure cancer here.  Is it really too much to ask to let some of us have our fun for a mere 24 hours per  year?

Because it's not about talking like a pirate. If it was really that way, there would be more done. Pirate avatars maybe. Pirate theme for the forum. Pirate threads and such.

This forum is not wacky or goofy in any way. This is one of the strictest forums I've ever seen. That's not a bad thing, it's just how it is. And then on one day of the year (2 if it happens on April Fools) you're forced to participate or leave for the day. It's just another form of control.

To me (personal opinion time!) a fun "Talk like a pirate day" would be threads about pirates in GD, maybe a photo contest or something in arts. Playing the pirate themed campaigns or having mods and admins with pirate nicknames. As it stands now it's just a way for the higher ups to make everyone else do something whether they want to or not.

Maybe I'm the only one who sees it this way.

I can understand it being only in General Discussion, and left out of the rest of the boards, and I wasn't a fan of the Navy Seals thing, but, in general, this place is getting just a bit too anally retentive.

Apparently arguments about Politics and Religion are fine, posting **** youTube videos is fine, but a word filter is 'teh ultimate evil'.

I remember when this place was about fun and as well as productivity.

I mean sure you can't really do anything different than yesterday or so. Nothing changes but we have to talk in a way we like to pretend pirates talked (but didn't).

That is what leads me to think this is not pirate fun but "you have to do because we can make you".

Seriously? Seriously?

Everyone is avoiding the fact that it is completely annoying for people for a whole day.  Or, probably more accurately, those people just don't care about those people.  So we end up with an ultimatum. Play along or go away. And this is the one wacky day we all let our hair down?

Might I put a different spin on this?

You generate the revenue to pay server expenses et. al. via banner ads.  Banner ads pay on a per-click basis.  Fewer clicks means less money, and fewer users means fewer clicks.  Does it seem very wise to tell a significant portion of your user-base **** off for a day, because you insist on shoehorning a joke into the forums?

Besides, when the options are "Play along," or "GO AWAY!" the joke loses a lot of it's humor.  It's like a middle school clique.

I removed this stupid word filter because it broke urls and replaced whole contents of posts with ransom message, some of which were important. If other admins would listen to me, we would never, ever use these stupid word filters anymore.

1) The normal word filter also breaks URLs, if the URL contains a censored word.  People know how to, and do, compensate for that.
2) If you don't like the look of a post, all you have to do is refresh the page and it'll be filtered differently.  The pirate filter isn't permanent; all the posts go back to normal when it's turned off.  (Assuming you haven't modified the post in the meantime.)
