So. I'm definitely gonna need to get FS2 from GoG, and I don't have a credit card. But GoG does accept Paypal, so I was thinking of using that. But I've also noted a significant amount of criticism for Paypal. So should I still go with Paypal? Yes or No? Thoughts please.

iirc to use paypal you have to link it to some bank account or credit card anyway. these days open a checking account they will usually give you a debit card. so id just use debit myself. i do have a paypal account though just because i sometimes use ebay. credit cards are nice because you can get charges reversed if some store tries to screw yea. so if you have a checking account ask your bank for a debit card and use that. money orders usually work too.

I bought FS2 through GoG.

I find paypal fine, works good

I've used paypal for a lot of online purchases in recent years, and don't have any complaints about it. Nuke's suggestion for setting up a debit card is a good idea, too.  One thing you have to be careful of though is that although transactions on debit go onto the account instantly, there is (usually) a day or two before they actually complete, so if the account is low on funds it's possible for pending charges to bring it below 0 and rack up a bunch of overdraft fees.  (This happened to me once due to a huge faulty charge from a rental-car company... was absolute hell to get it resolved.)  But anyway, as long as you keep track of your monies it should be fine. :)

I have been using it since 2000 and at least from a buyer's point of view, it's very good. It's just linked to my bank account.

If you're selling stuff online and want to use it to collect money, it has a few annoyances but works fine. It's probably still more convenient than the alternatives. Like ebay though, its protection policies are largely loaded in favor of the buyer.

Well, I only intend to use it for buying stuff of GoG; there's quite a few games there that I've always wanted, but discovered them too late. So I'll take Nuke's advice, set up a debit card, and use Paypal.

Good Old Games are a company who licensed the rights to sell Freespace 2 on their website from Interplay. As such they are a legal way of getting the game so we've stopped offering the illegal methods as it's in all of our interests for game publishers to notice that there is a market for space combat games (Especially since FS2 has consistently sold well on their site).

Various financial reasons I already disclosed on IRC once.

Good Old Games, a company that sells old awesome games, cheaply. Plus the site remembers your purchases, so if you wipe your hard drive, you can just re-dl the installer. Plus its all legal, and supporting them might mean more old games become available.

I was under the impression that it was legal. :/

Yep. Any free distribution of FS2 is illegal.

wow, what a shame.

whoever's interested in it, send me a private message, and i'll assist you in finding a version (legally of course).

anyone who thinks that a dead game is going to come back to life because someone aquired the license to distribute it for $2.99 is, sadly, mistaken.

It's $6 actually and is apparently doing rather well on GOG, and also generating funds for Interplay.

You would be well adviced to question the wisdom of older forumites, we all have our preferences and perversions

Careful.

FS2 is one of GoodOldGames' best-sellers, and with Volition still interested in doing an FS3, I guess that counts for something.

More importantly, supporting an organization that allows anyone easy, tech-supported access to cheap, DRM-free, unlimited downloads of a huge catalog of classic titles is a great cause.

I don't think there is any legal way to acquire it for free. The friends clause is gone.

Why don't you have a credit card?
I know this question wasn't for me, but wtf?
Screw credit cards. Why use them if you don't need them. Living in an american society of debtors who buy things without thinking about cost with budgets that don't support is a horrible symptom for the financially unable who think they are able (hey honey, lets go live in and pay for this new house and move out after 3 months because i have a minimum wage job which makes it nearly impossible for me to make the monthly mortgage payments put food on the table and pay for 900 channel satellite tv that i just can't live without).

Not to mention other dumb**** habits like getting another credit card to pay off your last one.

You can imagine why i don't need a credit card or want one and why other people may not need or want one also.
I am done.

I fully agree with you on the whole idea of credit cards, but I'll second the praise for debit cards.  It gives you all the convenience of a credit card, so you can shop online conveniently, but it draws your actual money out of your checking account, so you don't have that whole "I'll just pay it off later" mentality going on.

Yes debit cards were not part of my argument. Debit cards are really really great handy for when i don't have cold hard cash, and you can perform a credit or debit transaction.

Or, y'know, you could just get a credit card and pay it off every month like a responsible adult.
