Star Wars games... Overpopulation?
Perhaps it's just me but there seems to be an increasing number of planned/recently released Star Wars games of varying genres around... in the past I think almost all SW games (with the exception of Rogue Squadron, Podfighter, Starfighter etc...) have been extreme hits in the genres they occupy. At a glance the up-coming games look to be equally detailed and epic, but I was wondering - is it possible to dilute interest in games by releasing so many set in the same universe?

Highly possible.

I would like to play as a X-Wing pilot against those Yuuzhan Vong fighters and capital ships though..:D Maybe we should start flooding LucasArt with emails demading they do a game for the New Jedi Order.

doesn't it really depend on what genres all the games are in- if theyre all based on the same sort of plot like, i dunno, find and kill all enemies or something (oversimplification i know) then theyll get boring. all of them.

I get your meaning there (both of you) and especially like the idea of the Yuuzhan Vong... a mod for XWA perhaps?

If they were particularly clever they could continue the plot of the SW universe using different game genres with each telling a side of the same story (similar to the add-on packs for Half Life but set in different places etc...). That way they could rope in SW fanatics buy making it essential to have all the games to get the full story whilst also reaching each genre and advancing the story as  a whole...

Tell that to all the people who put C&C, C&C2, Tiberian Sun, RA, RA2, and Yuri's Revenge. Beat it till it bleeds. ;)

You could say that, or you could be kinder to the people who DID buy them and say that tried-and-true formulae are worth repeating. :)

And sometimes not... I have RA2 and got Emperor: Battle for Dune (only reason is because it was 13 bucks) and it is wayyyy to similiar. (for me)
Also E:BfD is clunky and moves akwardly with terrible pathfinding AI...

The AI pathfinding problems were there in the original C&C, and it has not really improved in RA2; they could have kept using the same basic idea, but a lot more enhancements should have been made in six years. (it wasn't too bad until TS, after which everything went downhill IMHO)

This is sort of semi-Ot, but I bought both Serious Sams - knowing fine well that the second was nigh-identical to the first one (that was why i bought the sequel).  Strangely, it became a lot less satisfying, so maybe too much of a good thing is bad for you.

On the other hand, I've bought al lealt 6different versions of ISS (Gameboy, SNES, PS1, N64, Ps2) , and been happy with all, so maybe it depends on the genre.

I like it, just that some parts of it are really frustrating.
Also it doesn't really have too much improvement over RA2 or any other CC-type game.

What's ISS?

ISS = International Superstar Soccer.

aka Pro Evolution on the Ps2.

Awful name, but the best footie games in existence. :)

I bet there will be another massive explosion of Star Wars Games when Attack of The Clones is released on the 16th may. Well there is Jedi Starfighter already as well as the Clone Campaigns for Galactic Battlegrounds.

I for one am looking forward to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic set 500 years before the Phantom Menace........and not a Gungon in sight :headz:

Yeah, it depends on genre (and personal inclination, of course) because take, for example, the RPGs. Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, have not made any big technological/gameplay innovations for a while but they're still popular. Why? in an RPG it's the story that counts so...

Well see, in these examples the whole genre is based on something other than the game engine and the system. It's more on how the story is presented...

But for Strategy games - I don't know, is it more units?, or more of the same with souped up graphics?. I mean if an alien came from the sky wouldn't he think Dune 2 and Emperor were awfully similar?

So yeah :p
