Want to render but don't have software? (No, not warez okay?)
Yeah. I guess they just like the Nintendo syndrome. Really dumb if you ask me.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

I hope that loads of people dl the free version, decide it's really good and then go find a nice warez version of Maya. That'd be so infinitely ironic.

A|W are doing so badly just wait another 6 months and you'll be able to pick up maya for $40.

well..maybe not but i wouldnt buy it even at that price.  I hate the damn thing...its 'orrible and ropey and has a crap polygon modeller.

Get soft|XSI experience...thats much nicer.  You do have to work at it in terms of getting to grips with the shaders and workflow though.

Free renderers...
Brazil 0.2.6 (beta, but very functional if a little slow)
BRMT (Renderman compliant renderer ,precursor to entropy.  get it at www.exluna.com)
the one that comes with yer program (duh)
Vray beta (another GI renderer for MAX)

not sure about any others....OH.  I ALMOST FORGOT.

Hey Steak why not release it commercially - I'm sure that'd get you some nice green things... ;)

I'd buy Maya in a heartbeat. They just lowered the price of Maya Complete to $2000 USD, which puts it on par with Lightwave 7. The only thing you lose is the clothing modeller and, I think, the realtime solid paint tools. A friend of mine just picked up Maya Unlimited, which has all of that.

The only thing I would say negative about Maya is the raytracing engine, which is crap compared to its modelling tools. However, Alias just got with the people who did MentelRAYs (the same people that did the renderer for Softimage). Now its got a top notch rendering engine as well.

Groovy stuff. If nothing else, this will net Maya more customers in the future, and do it legitimately. I started off with Lightwave as a warezed copy and ended up buying it. Same with Truespace. At least with Maya, my stuff will be all above board.

On the 'Nintendo' thing and ROMs: you know why Nintendo gets upset about ROMs and emulators? Because they DO get a cut of every SNES game sold. Licensing and royalty fees roll in from each purchase. Its the same as the situation with Sony vs Bleem! and the like. I'm not the most honest person in the world, but I am a bit of a programmer and I am a bit of a 3d artist. I'd hate for someone to rip off my work and me not get paid for it. That's why I got legit copies of my 3d software.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

I see your point - I read about what game developers thought about pirating and they thought the same thing. However, Nintendo does not produce the SNES (or old gameboy games) and it is hard to find... say a copy of Harvest Moon in your local gaming store. So the money they get is very minimal because most major game stores (EB, Toys R Us etc.) have sold off old games and now most sellers are Ebay (or whatever, auctions of some sort) sellers who probably won't pay royalties...
This is exactly the thing with Abandonware - they don't sell them...
Also Nintendo should make a wise decision for once and produce old SNES/Gameboy games (the good ones) in small amounts - I'm sure people would buy them if they were sold in prominent places...

BTW: we probably should get off this topic...

Actually, from what I've seen, Maya is simply the most overpriced program in existence. Either every pro who uses it on Renderosity and the satellite sites is an autistic 6-year-old who can't texture, model, or use render filters, or you're buying something that works almost, buit not quite, as well as TrueSpace for only a few thousand more bucks. LightWave, now, that's WORTH the price. 3DS MAX would be worth as much or more, in my opinion. Carrara and RDS, put together, kick ass. All of these solutions cost a fraction of what Maya does, and have one teensy little feature Maya doesn't, that makes it all worth while. They. Work.

Naow, if you wanna good free modeler, go abandonware or don't[/color]. If you want a half-assed one, or the pigs are just waiting to bust ya, go TS1. If you're both rich and stupid, go buy a Lamborghini and use it off-road. But kids, stay off Maya. Do it for your computer, so it doesn't lose the hard disk space. Do it for your future as a 3D modeler, so you aren't blackmailed years from now with some abomination you squeaked out after weeks of work in Maya. But most of all, do it for me, so I won't have to go in and say "I told you so" 500 times when people come back bearing paltry POS renders and complaints. Oh, and do it for the Gipper, because I'm avoiding doing actual real work right now.

A question: is there any reason why the pros (you know, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within etc.) use this tool. Does it really suck but somehow excel in movie production or....

Impressive. You know, that really looks like it is made of Legos; sort of like one of the large SW model sets. I was actually fooled there for a minute and had to look at it several times to see that it was a computer model and not a Lego creation; that's the sign of a well-designed model. ;)

...that it looks small and plastic?

Not bad. But I've seen unbelievable things done in TrueSpace, too... a single sample by someone who's obviously a pro means nothing. I've seen mind-blowing MS Paint pics, too. Look at the majority of Maya artwork, adn you'll see what I mean.
