Today's post is about optimizing and what a time sink it can be.

My own pc is pretty powerful but has a major problem with shiptrails. So when I'm noticing a drop in framerate its usually shiptrails at fault. Unfortunately this also means my pc is badly suited for testing whenever a mission is too heavy on a pc. With the result that I've been incredible lazy when it comes to adding LOD's and checking texture file sizes etc. I was also of the mindset that because most of my ships are rather low poly to begin with, adding LOD's was just a waste of memory, time and effort.
But then my testers started reporting rather bad frame rates in one mission so I finally got off my ass and decided to see what could be done better.
I then lost two whole days reexporting old models that had only a LOD 0 and finding oversized animated glowmap frames and resizing them. Hardly fun. And worse, I can't tell the difference on my own pc  :P

So if WoD will end up running like utter crap on your pc, you can blame my "Hurrdurr I have a 260GTX videocard so the rest of the world has one too" mentality  :P

I also ended up writing 30+ tech room entries but I decided against posting bits of it here because most of the entries will be slowly added as you progress through the campaign. Sorry to the folks that wanted to read some in universe fluff!

Overal I'm making pretty good progress, only a few more assets and the last few missions have to be done now. If I don't get distracted by feature creep (or optimizing! :P ) we might see a release in one or two months time.

Look forward to seeing this mod when it's out, it's something different and that can only be a good thing.

Should be fun to play - hope you get that cell-shaded post-process effect you're after.

Cellshading would just be an extra nifty eye candy thing and I don't think the post processing scene is currently making a lot of progress, so I'm not really counting on it (;
WoD should be fun enough even without it though  ;)

Progress is being made on a steady rate. Most of the assets are now done. Most of the work will be FREDing the remaining missions, making a few cutscenes and polishing&bugtesting etc.

Somewhere along the way I missed the 1 year anniversary of me working on WoD
Being into a design process for so long does some odd things to the mind. I don't think I can ever play an other game again without trying to figure out they are achieving certain effects. or why the hell they decided to make certain decisions in gameplay design.

I also have to remind myself at several times that while a certain character may seem incredibly developed inside my mind, the players will only get to see what's in game (Three lines of text isn't exactly a wealth of character development  :p :lol: ). Same goes for a lot of things though. I'm pretty tired of hearing the same music tracks over and over in test play runs, seeing the same models, the same .ani's. Almost to the point that I want to change them. But then I have to remind myself that it will be all new and shiny for the people playing it for the first time and that changing stuff like that is just feature creep that will only delay a release.  
You people will probably breeze through the campaign within a day  :p

Working on the very last missions now but it might still take an other month at this rate.
So eh, here's a screenie or something.

Looks pretty cool. You seem to have put some quality work into it.  I'll be sure to download it when it comes out. Hoping for that nicely packed .vp folder. Will it run on 3.6.10?

Indeed, 3.6.12 RC2 is required. 3.6.10 will not work at all since WoD makes use of several features introduced during the .11 phase. 
Then again, .12 is pretty much superior to .10 in every day so  :)

Aye, It's one of my top priorities to make the installation as easy and painless as possible (saves The E a lot of headaches too :P )


I'm also pleased to say that this mod should even run pretty decently on older hardware. Tested it today on my rather aged laptop (1,7ghz single core, 1gb mb, raedon 9700 mobility, it still achieved an average 20-40fps on 1280x800 with settings max, advanced mediavp's installed). I was afraid that even though the models are low poly, I may had overdone certain missions in terms of effects, ship count etc.

My framerate crashes from 60+ to ~20 whenever one of those missile boats unleashes a volley :/

My framerate crashes from 60+ to ~20 whenever one of those missile boats unleashes a volley :/
go into tables\mv_effects-wep.tbm and remove the "particle spew" flag from the @Skirmisher entry. See if that makes any difference, report back results.

Eh, ok, I exaggerated.
The massive battle @  blockade cutscene during the opening volley runs at ~20 FPS (peak 35, min 15) without the pspew and at ~15 (Peak 30, min 10) with the pspew (couldn't see any particles though).

Though I do recall missile pspew lagging horribly when I was testing DoS and darts still had their pspew.

Amusingly, for that blockade cutscene I already predicted that all those missiles would cause slowdown so I made a seperate missile type that fires in smaller swarms and has no pspew to begin with, just for that cutscene. So you should probably check with an other mission  :p
