It was a relatively densely-populated area, actually, something like 70 miles from one of Chile's largest cities and 200 from its capital.  It definitely caused major damage, and the Chilean government expects the death toll to rise, but not drastically so like we saw in Haiti.  One element that might wind up saving lives is the fact that the quake struck early in the morning, when larger buildings and other structures more prone to catastrophic collapse would have been mostly empty.

And the most powerful recorded earthquake in history was a 9.5, which occurred not too far away from this quake's epicenter.
