Re: Mag 8.8 quake in Chile
Here in Tassie many a person went swimming after hearing that there would be a wave - lucky for them it wasn't big by the time it got here...

Wait ... what?

They went swimming when they heard that a tsunami might be coming their way?

So, in 2008 there was the one in China, earlier this year another one in Haiti, now this. I bet the doomsdayers are going to be all over this one.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I know someone once linked to a site full with doomsday predictions, when they were predicted, and when they (were supposed to) occur. Anyone still has that link?

Oh, wait, here it is:http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm

Doomsday "prophets", it doesn't take a genius to notice that there has been a LOT of **** hit the fan lately geologically speaking.  Somethings happening down there, and you're a fool if it doesn't make you at least a little nervous.

Any evidence?

Got a mean frequency t-test to show us with alpha < .05?

Or is this just another availability heuristic illusion?

Re: Mag 8.8 quake in Chile
maybe we can get a graph of the function of seismograph coverage vs number of recorded earthquakes

Past 7 days worth of earthquakes.

Not saying it's indicative one way or the other, but I'm having difficulty finding past years on the USGS website.

And I've got zero scientific evidence to back this up, but I'm more than happy to settle with "coincidence."

Chile has been home to three of the ten most powerful earthquakes in recorded history, including number one on that list.  I mean, seriously:
://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tectonic_plates_Caribbean.png

See? Chile lies right at the edge of the South American and Nazca plates, Haiti between the Caribbean and North American plates.  Are you surprised there's a few big earthquakes where huge sections of the earth's crust are smashing together?

I'm not. Japan's also near the Pacific Ring of Fire, and they get small earthquakes all the time.

Big earthquakes seem to come in waves. In '94 we had the northridge quake, '95 was the Kobe earthquake, then in '99 there was the Taiwan quake. Then nothing huge for several years. Now it is repeating.

We're not fools, we're the educated elite that dont believe in superstitious nonsense. Do you seriously think the end of the world is "soon"?

Seriously, the world isn't coming to an end.  A few quakes (albeit a few powerful ones) aren't signs of the end, any more than a few powerful hurricanes and pandemics.

The end of the human world might be coming to an end, but the Earth is staying right here.  As in, existing with life going on while orbiting around the sun.

Re: Mag 8.8 quake in Chile
If we're so scientifically advanced and knowledgeable, where is the detailed map of the Earth's interior?  I mean if i wanted to see what's 5 miles beneath my feet in graphic, obsessive detail where would I go to obtain this information?

The truth of the matter is, we're not as knowledgeable as some of us pretend to be.  The problem isn't that "superstitions" are necessarily out dated, it's that scientists are having they're instincts and gut feelings educated right out of them.  Just because you can quantify, correlate and qualify an event or series of events doesn't discount the possibility of them being factual or related, you simply lack the scale of perspective to see it.

Because funding for scientific research often gets "reappropriated" to the F-35.

Because the USGS gets a grand total of $1.1 billion a year, none of which is even dedicated to studying tectonics.

Because everyone's more interested in being an astronomer than a geologist.[/quote]

Yeah, they are.  The reason we have people in the scientific fields in our society is so they can find explanations to the things superstitious nonsense used to attribute to a guy hurling lightning bolts.  If we had a country run by people who thought The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and Revelations were pure scientific fact...

People will attach themselves to any doomsday scenario they can imagine.  How many times in the past fifty years have groups said the world was coming to an end?  First it was nuclear holocaust, then global epidemic, then natural disasters of the last few years...even sharks taking over the world.

even sharks taking over the world.

Hey, the only reason the sharks haven't taken over the world is because they're too well-adapted to their own environment to bother trying.
