DeSSSSSSSSSSSSScent 4
No further news eh? I know a few years back there was some talk about a next decent game.... but have not heard anything since.

I saw in the Decent splitted thread that PXO half 1 became outrage entrtainment, and created D3 then got shut down....

Any chance on THQ making D4 or did it die with OE.

It has the "s". --Jeff Vader

Well as far as Inteplay's site is concerned they have the IP so probably not.

I just read through:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_%28video_game%29

Quote
Around that time, Volition also began work on Descent 4, but development was canceled in 2000, owing mostly to disappointing sales of Descent 3.[citation needed] Descent 4 may have been originally planned as a prequel to Descent, and reportedly served as a basis for the first-person shooter Red Faction. Similarities include a reference to a "humans first" strike in Descent's opening briefing, and plot points such as nanotechnology, an evil faceless corporation, and the virus they are attempting to harness. Mike Kulas (president of Volition) stated in an interview that the Red Faction and Descent universes are strictly separate, however he did admit that code intended for Descent 4 had been used in Red Faction.

So I was partially right...they were going to make it. So im guessing Decent 4 has become the new Freespace 3?
"Not gonna happen, so quit mentioning it" ?
Anyone know if theirs reasonable hope for the future? Because as far as i know, THQ isnt doing too bad..

Well since Interplay just released Decent for the Wii there is always hope but that would have to do well and assuming it does will any games made be for the PC or just console?  Of course the real question is can they even make it or is it like FS2 with both companies owning rights?

Descent 2 was the best.

...for single player. D3 had more fun multiplayer, IMO.

I would say D3 was better on both fronts. The levels and objectives were a lot more interesting.

However, D2 has had much more longevity due to the excellent user-made mission packs that were made (and still continue to be made) for it. When I want to play a 6DOF shooter, I usually go to D2X-XL and not D3. D3 never had more than a handful of custom singleplayer levels, and I've only seen two or three that were comparable in quality to the Outrage levels.

Descent 3 didn't have the Pyro-GX, instant fail on all magnitudes for me.

The GX is by far the most badass design ever.

Re: DeSSSSSSSSSSSSScent 4
Yes, yes it is.

Which is why I modded my FS2 installation to allow me to fly it in the campaign.  :p

Ewww... no, I have to disagree. The objectives are the things that I utterly despise from that game. ****ing unintuitive BS that I often wasted hours flying around pressing random buttons and whatnot because I could never figure out what in the hell I was supposed to DO!

The only good objective in that game was the level where you had to protect the reactors from the robots. Just because it was an awesome reversal of roles from previous games.

Really?  The Guide-Bot was just about always able to lead you to the exact location of each objective, which more often than not was a single switch or destroyable object.  With the exception of one or two more complex instances I can think of that did require a bit of guesswork (and one of those, level 14, had some clues in the form of personnel log entries), everything was fairly straightforward.  D3 may have had some flaws in terms of story integration and overall execution, but at least it was more varied and interesting than another 30-level "keys-reactor-exit" slog.

Re: DeSSSSSSSSSSSSScent 4
Yeah, you could always use the Guidebot, and you had a list and description of all the objectives in the automap/HUD screen. The only puzzle I remember being confused by was the priest icon maze in level 6, and I figured that out after a while.

D3 actually feels like a modern FPS because of this variety in levels and objectives, and would stack up very well against any game today in that respect. D2 is very good but definitely feels like a product of its times, coming from the early days of 3D games when generic levels and simple objectives were the norm. In fact, many of the best D2 level designers tried to do something different than the keys-reactor-exit routine within the (very limited) framework of the engine. D2X-XL is now giving designers some more options.
