Let's talk about the score... :P
Hey, I would like to know how the score is calculted, because I created a new character, and after the third mission (excluding training mission) of FS2, I just got -400 points  :D

I'm playing in insane mode, so maybe the low hull integrity in the end of each mission reduces my score... or maybe the calls to rearm cost points... but I don't really understand why I got -400 points lol : maybe I'm playing insane, but I succeed to keep more than the half of the fighters in the end of each mission.

So, how the score is calculated ?

Rearming and calling in reinforcements reduce score.

Killing enemies and completing objectives add to your score.

That's essentially it.

hmmm..

GTVA Colossus: 10000

So, if I destroy the GTVA Colossus, I earn 10000 points and I become lieutenant ?

Hehe, first, I become lieutenant, and after, command kill me, that's nice

If you want to see my pilot profile : http://www.drivehq.com/sharing/ShareLogon.aspx?key=7329586/1jh85ehhax8v

Does anyone know about the negative points ?
Ok, it's rearming and calling in reinforcements... hmm, I gonna take a look and do a test to see how much points I lose when I call it.$
And do you know if points are multiplicated when I play insane mode ?

No, in real life I think command would like to make me return to Earth, but the jump node leading to Earth has been broken, you know  ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

All right guys, now, never rearm, because rearming cost 20 points. You can repair your ship only if you have destroyed 2 Hercules before

I found something interesting in the walkthrough :

FreeSpace 2's scoring system automatically excludes the damage done by beams when determining who killed what. If you fly up to the Belisarius, preferably as soon as it jumps in, and hit it at least once before the Psamtik  destroys it with its main gun, the credit for that kill will go to you, not the destroyer. This quirk in FreeSpace 2 has been carried over into FS2_Open, and applies for every mission that you play in the game, even mods and custom missions. Be warned, however, that the Belisarius  has strong anti-fighter defenses, even though its beams are neutered and will not open fire on you.

So, even I don't destroy this cruiser, I can gain point anyway on it, it's good to know :)

AFAIK, that's been fixed in recent FSO builds, and you can no longer get points like that.

What? Then it's ridiculously hard to get a promotion!

Against the Belisarius, a Rockeye's significantly long range can let you get a shot off without much retaliation.

Oh yeah, and don't forget, 10,000 for the SC Thanatos in the final mission :D

Re: Let's talk about the score... :P
Rearming doesn't reduce score in FS2, it did in FS1 but that just encouraged people to self-destruct instead of rearm in multi so V changed it for FS2.

Fairly sure you get negative for friendly kills but it's hard to get away with them while still having a valid mission result :P

Re: Let's talk about the score... :P
It may still reduce score in single player, it was only an issue in multi and AIP table has a line which allows you to set how much score you lose for rearming (it defaults to 20).
And trick with beam kills should still work in unmodded FS (with mediavps), since the fix is also enabled via AIP line.

Re: Let's talk about the score... :P
hmm!
Guess I just read the dev notes and rolled with it, never have checked.
20 is kinda insignificant though..

I started the main campaign recently with basic media vp's and 3.6.10, and got the kill for the Belasarius by going right up to it. So, you don't actually need to do this, you can just use one missile? It would save trying to run away later, esp. in insane...

Uhm... Just approach from above the Deimos? You get hours if time to position yourself..
It's basically completely undefended from there..

Yeah, but I think you actually have to destroy a turret or disable a subsystem to get the kill.

You don't have to, one hit is enough, since beams don't count towards kill score.

No, it doesn't. It's been fixed, but you need to use a special tbl setting to enable the fix.

Are you sure it only takes one hit?  The only way I've ever been able to get the points for the Belisarius is if I destroy one of it's turrets.

Yeah it only takes one hit.
Also, I don't consider it a bug, otherwise you'd never get a single kill in "The King's Gambit" cause those friggin Mjolnirs steal them all!

Re: Let's talk about the score... :P
Well, I think the gained points on each mission are based on what percentile of damage you did to the target and on the hull integrity that the target had when it jumped in.

For example, first mission in insane : 8 kills = 7 Hercules and 1 Deimos (the Bellisarius), and I earned 584 points. Even I killed the Deimos class cruiser, I didn't gain all of the 800 points. (and none of my fighters have been destroyed, just Alpha 2 went into red)

I didn't really kill the Bellisarius, but I destroyed one of his turret (the beam turret). Let's try to see what does it do when we don't destroy any subsystem or turret..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The experimentation is done : I've launched my missiles without targeting subsystem, and now I have the Bellisarius in my killing spree.
Next test : I will see if playing in the easiest mode divides the earned points

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Result of the mission in very easy mode : 11 kills, 10 Herc and the Bellisarius. Total earned points : 100 points
Conclusion : The very easy mode reduces the amount of earned points. So, playing in insane mode allows the player to gain many points.
The points (sub)system of Freespace has been very well thought  :)
