Besides all the other points in favour of dogs. I would point out that dogs are generally much more smart than cats, they just have that loyal streak due to being descended from pack animals.
I've owned cats, I own dogs, I'm around cats (my girlfriends) all the time.
My dogs are much more intelligent, much more fun (and because one of them is a rescue, she can be more independent and trouble than a cat ever was) and generally much more pleasant to be around (for all that Jodie, the 11 year old rescue, can be a pain at times, she realises that she's stepped out of line after very little telling off). Also, I can excercise with my dogs, taking them hiking and camping, etc etc. Which I could never do with cats for obvious reasons.
Oh, and Batts, you may not want a wife who loves you unconditionally, that's true, but a dog isn't like that, treat a dog right and it will love you, wrong it, and they can get violent/angry. A cat, however, is the kinda ***** that would run off and cheat on you with anything that has two legs, no matter how you treat it.
Edit:
Spelling. God, I need a new keyboard.
