I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 that I maxed out with 2GB RAM and installed Win7 on .  I was able to procure a 512MB GeForce 8400 GS vid card and dropped in an old SB Live! Value sound card (from an old Dimension 8300) primarily for the built in Gameport so my Sidewinder Precision Pro would work (non-USB).  This is one heck of a Frankenstein build and it took a little tweaking to get everything to play nice together, but so far, so good.  

However, I am having a small issue. I broke out my old FS2 discs and installed the game, but when I fired it up, the opening movie graphics are borked.  There are vertical stripes of distortion half an inch to an inch wide all the way across the display.  That is, starting on the far left, there is an inch wide section that is fine, then an inch of distortion, then another section thats fine, then another distotion...this continues all the way across the screen.  The distortion looks like 1 pixel high horizontal lines that have the wrong graphics in them somehow.  Sorry for the convoluted explanation but I don't have any screenshots.

I'm hoping someone here has an idea on where to start troubleshooting this.  I have gotten best drivers available for my vid and sound cards and I'm using a gameport support pack for Vista written by Daniel Kawakami (Google it).  Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Are you using FS2_Open? If not, please upgrade to it.
If you do, please read the FSO FAQ, and post an fs2_open.log.

I'm not using FS2_Open. I'll try upgrading to that tonight and will let you know what happens.  Thanks!

FS2_Open installed and running smoothly so far. However, I now need to see if there is a way to play around with the lighting effects in the ship selection screen. seems a little dark. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for all the help. The FSOpen install did the trick. Apparently they are more compatible with my hardware than the original game. And I was also able to adjust the lighting so it looks better.  Now I just need to find somewhere that can advise me on getting similar issues resolved for Starlancer.

Say, do you have FSPort installed?  You can play the FS1 missions first then.

I installed FSPort on another PC (the old Dimension 8300 I mentioned in my original post) about a year ago and played through the FS1 game, but didn't get a chance to play through FS2.  I've played through both games in the past, but that was when they were first on store shelves.  I am looking forward to finishing FS2 and trying out some of the other mods available.

Hrmm....looks like that 100 GB hard drive I dropped into this Dimension 2400 isn't going to be big enough to hold all the awesomeness that I'm finding here!!!     This stuff is just too good to pass up. Luckily I have access to a PCI card that can give me 4 SATA ports so I can drop a spare 500 GB SATA drive into this sucker!
