It should ask you "Would you like to update?" and you just click "Not now."

I've *URL TO MOJANGS FILES REMOVED* the necessary files to role back. (I think )
Just decompress and plop it your .minecraft folder.

Admin Edit: People, you can't do that.  Mojang is very clear on those .jar files as to who own them.  Linking to an archive of them is redistributing their IP.  If you need to roll back, look at MCNostalgia and the Minecraft Downgrade Tool. - Rev. POSIX

The game never aks me anything. It just automaticly updates and I've found no way to disable that, other than not connecting.
And if I don't connect I can't connect to the server. :banghead:

Ugh, ****. This game would be a LOT better without the constant crashing due to Notch being a dip**** and making the game with Java.

In my experience Minecraft crashes somewhat regularly if I leave it on max rendering distance with fancy graphics (gives an error regarding memory allocation or some such).  Probably just my graphics card barfing.  Dunno if that's consistent with anyone else but if so it helps to run on a lower setting or turn off fancy graphics.

Not from my experience on Fedora 15 x86_64. Hasn't crashed a single time during gameplay. The JVM does crash after you close minecraft though, but that doesn't interrupt play. It should be noted I'm using IcedTea though. Haven't had the problem on Windows 7 64-bit either.

Windows 7 64 Bit here, can't say I've ever had a problem with crashing unless I do the 'vast amount of TNT' thing, and that's a well-known problem.

For those who somehow may have upgraded to the latest version of minecraft and the server you play on hasn't yet for some reason, fret not, there is a way to roll your unmodified client back.

MCNostalgia
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/106402-tool-cyborgs-tools-mcnostalgia-102/

and a GUI version for windows based on MCNostalgia, Minecraft Downgrade Tool
http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/tool-minecraft-downgrade-tool.13873/

These use binary diff patches to change the jar vs redistribution of Mojang's IP.

Mojang has been notified by the author of MCNostalgia that the tool exists and how it works, and Mojang has not complained or said 'do not do this', so while it may not be officially sanctioned, it's also not running afoul of any copyrights.

I can confirm that the downgrade tool works for windows as I was able to downgrade a 1.7.2 client to 1.6.6 under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Share and enjoy, and please, no more links to the .jars  :)

For what it's worth, I used to have crashes all the time until I put a limit on Java's memory. Place the following line in a .bat file in the same directory as minecraft.exe:

Code: [Select]
java -Xms512m -Xmx768m -jar Minecraft.exe
Lemme know if that works for you.

Also, those of you with 64-bit Windows should definitely be running 64-bit Java, not 32-bit. I've heard that that can cause crashes as well.

EDIT: Also, another handy tip for those of you who play online a lot:

Code: [Select]
java -Xms512m -Xmx768m -jar Minecraft.exe <username> <password> <server:port>
Obviously without the < and > symbols. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Side note: In my experience, it seems that this may work for windows, but java on the Mac is a somewhat different beast.  When I added -Xmx1024m to mine, it improved things from the default of nothing specified.  The windows side, I didn't have to touch, it runs smoothly.

YMMV, IANAL, and so on of course

If someone wants to give me a copy of the world file I'll make an attempt to render it, but that is up to qaz and rhx.

Unless, ofcource, open ports for dynamap have been found? That would be a much better solution.

EDIT: cool natural (kinda) wonder:

So much as put a torch on it and it will all fall down.

So, while I'm making the I-1S International Subway from Eden to my Bastion (a ~2000 block trip along a flat region 8 blocks above bedrock), I ran into several lakes of lava, requiring buckets of water and diamond picks.  The usual.  I chance upon a cave while digging up some iron, walk in, and see a dungeon.  I ended up having to fight around 25 zombies while lagging, and eventually managed to torch up the whole place.  I destroy the spawner, pillage and break down the chests, and harvest the mossy cobblestone.  Usual deal.

Then, it got weird.

The whole place is completely lit up, and I'm digging out this mossy cobblestone.  Suddenly a Zombie spawns next to me.  I kill it.  Boy, that was weird.  I continue mining.  Another zombie spawns next to me.  I kill it.  I continue mining.  A third zombie spawns in front of me, and by now I'm creeped out by the mobs spawning in total brightness.  I walk around the shaft for a bit, use F3 to see that no mobs of any description are visible, and walk back into the dungeon to finish up digging up mossy cobblestone.  I'm about 3/4 the way done when I get ninja'd.  Read: no spawner within at least a 64 block radius and not a modicum of darkness in the whole chamber.  Out of nowhere, a group of six zombies simultaneously appears out of thin air directly in front of me in this completely bare, empty, lit-up dungeon.  They swarm around me and proceed to wreck my ****.  By now, I'm stuck in a corner with six zombie ninjas gang-raping me while I am down to my last mushroom stew, 5 hearts, and 5 armor while I carry a bunch of freshly-mined ore and diamond tools.  I've had enough of this **** by now, so I disconnected before I died.

Unless there's a server mod that makes mobs spawn in groups for no apparent reason, I have no ****ing idea what happened in there.

Are you absolutely sure there are no caves along your tunnel? Spawn rates have been tweaked but I don't think they cause zombies to spawn in light...
