I saw a couple of torches, but CP figured that they might just be someone's temporary hide-outs.  Did you leave me anything at all? :p

Okay, something's seriously messed up on my end. Every time I try and log on (this has been going on for weeks now), I either time out, or when I don't then I spawn with no terrain anywhere and fall forever into the void before an error sends me back to the main menu. More recently I've managed to spawn with terrain under my feet, but it extends all of 3 or 4 blocks around me with void everywhere else. And then I time out. :(
That sounds exactly like the problem I usually have. Unfortunately, the only solution - and a partial one at that - seems to be finding the time of day or night when there is minimal network traffic in your area. The server has really been lagging for everyone lately, unfortunately.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Man, I love the rail system you guys have, even if I don't really know how it works yet.  I'm currently trying to find the area Swantz mentioned, though I started off on the wrong set of rails the first time.  On the plus side, I think I ran down a cactus that happened to be extending over the tracks, since it randomly appeared in my hand.

Edit: I found a spot to settle down near the end of the northern rail line; there's a big chunk of unoccupied land just to the south and west of the northern stronghold.  Lots of cool mountain and cliff features.  I'm in a little rectangular cave at the bottom of a valley, so we'll see how things go from there.

I put up a bunch of extra signs a while ago. From the spawn you need to go to central station, and once you get on that line the next stop should have a sign that says exit here for regional railway, and just keep following the signs after that.

Also any progress on the lack of hostile mob spawns? :<
Me is sad coz my mob trap I put so much effort into isn't working :(

Does your mob trap rely on an underground spawn area, or is it above ground?  Regardless, lighting up all of the cave systems around will help quite a bit with that.

Mongoose, give me your coordinates (Press F3) and I'll put a station up for you.

If there are only some then maybe I haven't been to that particular location. Even if I have though if you go down deep enough there should be lots of interesting stuff around. Just avoid the more populated places on the server and you should find many resources.

If there's a few torches there's a good chance someone spent a night there to survive the overworld mobs and did not clean up their mess. :) If it's a cave it may also have been anyone's spur of the moment mining trip.

I've had half a dozen mining trips in that general area, that's why I think I might have put them there.

Well, in any case, the sheer volume of the map probably means that there's plenty of stuff around even if you were in the area, so I'll see what I can turn up. :)

I'm slowly starting to realize how crazy lucky (or not?) I was in digging my little SP cave where I did.  The cavern network I've tapped into is almost indescribably extensive, to the point that I still keep stumbling across whole branches that I haven't lit up yet.  I've discovered a few different little dungeon rooms, including one that cost me my entire inventory when I got into a ****ty situation while half-stuck under a waterfall; I could have sworn that I'd made it back there fast enough, but all my stuff was already gone.  Oh well.  My latest adventure is poking through an abandoned mine that I discovered attached to one of the caverns, which has yielded me a ton of free minecart tracks.  It's also introduced me to cave spider spawners...dear lord.  I must have died at least three times to the little bastards, but fortunately I was able to grab my stuff again each time.

The best part about all this is that I still haven't explored more than a single map-item's worth of the surface.  I should probably get back to that at some point. :p

There are three types of cave systems not including 1.8 underground additions: small, medium, large. The largest can extend all the way to bedrock and have a good chance of having visible diamond. Large cave systems aren't always very accesible via the surface, so you were pretty damn lucky.

On my first SP map I had go had 10 minutes from spawn just to find one, but that one was pretty neat though because it was inside a large mountain.

I should try bringing down my map sometime to see just how far out the caverns extend surface-wise.  'Course I'll probably lose it in the process, but oh well.

Edit: Think I found one of your former mines, Pred; there's a little cobblestone ledge outside of a passage downward.  It's actually in a pretty ideal spot for something I want to try, and there are a few other caves in the area that look fairly untouched, so I'll see how it goes.

Yeah, if you do some more searching around you'll probably find a small house in the middle of a cave with a bed in it. I get crazy bored sometime. :P
BTW, don't worry about nabbing anything natural or player-made down there. At this point, I have more than enough not to care.

About 1-200 meters south of my northernmost outpost should be pretty ripe for the picking. Give it a shot if you like.

I read something like this on the wiki, but I'm not convinced... Did this small/medium/large categorization comes from notch, or from disassembly of the java bytecode? Because I'm inclined to think it's just some idiot making distinctions where none exist.

Anyone who has played Minecraft for any length of time knows about small/medium/large/epic caves, they are obvious and easy to tell the difference between just by walking in them.

Small: short, coal, maybe some iron
Medium: still somewhat short, good odds on iron
Large: big, could take a while to explore, small odds on diamond
Epic: best way to describe it, Sara's mines. you are almost guaranteed to find diamond, but the odds of you finding every pathway on your first try are slim due to the shear size.

You don't need a guide to classify them, you can do it on your own with a little experience.

Time to show off Axemland! Where can you find Axemland? It's not really connected on any rail lines, but its closeish to them...! I like building buildings more than making boring rail lines. :p I made a short one from one end of Axemland to the other and it was the least fun thing I built!

Use this to find Axemland!

My first house I made when I started out on the server. I don't go there much anymore.

The Mackerel Family House!

And their as-of-yet unnamed neighbors! (Still under construction)

A nice quaint town square for the invisible people of Axemland!

Don't buy Tacos from here! You can find them cheaper anywhere else!

A bridge to the other side of Axemland. You can see FRED's fort in the background.

The Temple of Vassago! Spooky!

FRED's Fort up close.

On top of FRED's F'n Awesome Tower. Hey a floating island!

Getting dark!

You can see the glass topped rail tunnel that goes from one end of Axemland to the other quite nicely.

Hee, that looks fun.  I should stop by for a visit.  That reminds me, I haven't seen Sara's crazy floating island yet either.

:P I'm not new to this. I've made plenty of mob traps before and they always work. It's gotta be something to do with one of the server plugins.

And even if I have missed some caverns around it, something should be spawning in my trap at least some of the time.

If you wants go check it out yourself, its under my house in the lair :P
