If I had to make a wild guess based on the viewership statistics on YouTube, its immense popularity definitely isn't coming from what most people consider to be the "target" audience (although Lauren Faust doesn't really do little kid's shows - she tends to make self-aware work that can be enjoyed by anyone, tell me you didn't like Powerpuff Girls or Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and you'll be in quite the minority) and almost all of the fan works like this music and the immense flood of artwork that's been pouring out is definitely done by people that the creators probably never imagined would care about the show.
