Excerpt from Styxx's guide to Freespace style:

Terran ships look like boxes, and are generally grey.
Vasudan ships look like fishes.
Shivan ships have red bits and lots of spikes.

You already have one, the game itself.  :D  Just take a look at the models (preferably second generation) and go from there with the designs.  They're sleek, but they still have an "old-school" military look to them...like the Harrier or the Tomcat. (In relation to real life aircraft)

It's the purple and turquoise - those are colors restricted to nebulas in freespace - that's why it doesn't have a "Freespace" look. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Really? So there's a design similarity between a Perseus and a Medusa and an Orion and a Leviathin?

I think Styxx has the closest thing to a style guide with his boxes, spikes and fishes.

In FS:

Terran fighters ALWAYS look at least vaguely like fighters (yick)
New Vasudans are Symmetrical, smooth, and have that annoying scaly brown texture that's supposed to make them look cobbled from sandstone or summat.
Old Vasudans look cool as all hell, but generally follow the same guidelines as Terrans.
Terran capships look superficially realistic as ships, gut tend to have engines all along the bottom or something like that. Also, they're big and chunky.
Shivans look like everything that doesn't look Terran. In FS1, that means they look like a less-standard variety of Terran vessel, in FS2 they look like bugs and spiky things.

Dude, it looks kinda like the B5 Jump-gates...

But still awesome:yes:

That model looks good...but maybe the pink/purple glow it a little overdone.

Other than that...the geometry could use SOMETHING more...i have No idea what though.

Either way - wikkid stuff :)

I have that feeling too... I just can't think of anything to put on it anymore. And what do you suggest about the glow?

the mesh is too "slick" I think. doesn't fit with the map, actually. you need to extrude polys here and there, or change the map to a cleaner one.

If i were you, i'd put some kind of lattice in between the quartered panels towards the rear.

Get rid of those toruses towards the camera, and maybe add some extrusions around the outer ring (sensor booms? stuff like that)

The glow...just make it less saturated.  The colour balance is fine but its too dominating.  Just bring the intensity down to about....2/3 of what it is right now?

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

What is the point of complaining about somebody's made-up adjective?(but I do admit it sounded stupid :D )
I completely understood the point when I read that post.
Go complain about the government or the direction your blender spins or something.

BTW making this to fit freespace couldn't be too much of a stretch.
Just redo the Pink colorations and replace them with blue for Terran or maybe red for Shivan.(I like that one.)

Okay, so like you're the only person who didn't understand the question. I'll make it clearer.

What the hell is 'freespacey' or 'freespaceish' or more bluntly, 'What makes something 'freespace' or 'not freespace' enough?

I've seen people told their work was 'not freespace' or 'not freespacey' so I decided to ask the question as to what exactly makes somethign 'freespacey'.

Does that clarify the question for you? Perhaps smaller words would help? Maybe a little more vitriol and bile? Everyone else understood the question for the second and third sentances:

Run along. Go complain complain about something useful, or better yet, don't.

**TOPIC DERAILED**

Is it just me or has everyone been in a really scatty mood since wednesday?

There have been numerous heated arguments here, and on other forums I frequent, plus at uni there have been about seven massive fights including one where some guy got his head almost knocked off by a bottle.  For crying out loud guys, lets get it together here at least!

Seems ok to me - perhaps it's just the time of year or something. At least try and keep the insults to a minimum though guys :)
