Well being a HW and FS uber fan I thought about what I could do for a FS2 campaign+mod. Essentially, what if Freespace had encountered the Beast?

Now, I can make all the Beast ships and everything, but as for a campaign well, I'll do my best I guess. Not promising a BP level campaign thats for sure lol. Thinking of simply basing it off Cataclysm's campaign. Thanks to whoever did the ship hitpoints regen code btw :P (since that is a quality of Beast ships)

Anyway, some things I want to ask about.
1. Fade in infection process possible? I figured out how to have a normal aeolus change model into the infected one, was easy. Of course it just suddenly changes into that when the event triggers. Also the ship that changes keeps the ship sound of the original, instead of changing to the proper Beast ship sound (the beams stop working too but I know how to fix that).
2. I'm going with the Beast infection beam as a TAG weapon and I'd have all ships that are supposed to be infected given events that make them change when tagged (unless there is a better way to do this?). I'm going to assume the beam can't be made to bounce to nearby ships?
3. Very large Beast capital ships (Mothership class) have a similar effect to critically damaged FS ships (the electricity fx), not sure if I heard right about that, but can it be made to always occur on a ship regardless of health, or for a duration (when ships were infected in Cataclysm that effect played during the conversion process then stopped)?
4. Cruise missile kamikaze infection ideas anyone? Uber short range TAG weapon with no effects (but causes the missile to kill itself)?

Should also say I intend no Shivan things at all to be involved as I'm going with this taking place after FS2, by how much idk maybe like 19 years or something.

I'm going to assume the beam can't be made to bounce to nearby ships?
Good luck with this question. I didn't get an answer for it when I asked the same thing maybe five times in ACoFS, three years ago I think.

Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

 
This could be interesting. Crossover stories can be fun, and watching beast and Shivan ships go at it could be cool.

Despite how unrealistic it is, I would practically demand the Beast be VA'd if this ever became a big campaign. It's just too creepy and awesome not to be :p

It's not really 'unrealistic' considering the original source of the Beast (Naggarok) speaks. Quite a mouthful at that.

 
I was refferring more to the massive undertaking that VA'ing can be.

But yes, the Naggarok would not shut up. That one's of the reasons I loved killing it.

 
Well if I base the campaign off Cataclysm I can use the dialog from it. As for Beast vs Shivan well I would prefer that to be something else, maybe a second campaign where that's the idea and the GTVA isn't involved at all.

I already have a lot of in-game ship speech and other sounds (like when ships are infected)

On a side note: as the beast in cataclysm came from some layer of hyperspase acesed by the Nagarok via its prototype drive, i think an interesting scenario to introduce the beast to FS would be the GTVA screwing up when building the Sol gate.

This is the best idea ever.  I say go with a campaign of your own, add voice acting later.  See if Ransom will offer tips on how to scare the pants off people.  He's the master of that kind of stuff.

As for effects, you're probably best off working with what you've got for now and doing an HD remake later.  You might be able to switch the textures by having the ship's glow map flash to a bright white from all its windows before switching to the infected look - almost like the ship has been internally electrocuted?  I don't think a slow fade is doable right now?

Regarding beam bouncing, maybe you can fake it.  That sort of thing would probably have to be scripted...

 
Yes I was thinking that I would do the best I can and then fix any problems and improve anything that needs improving :P
