A friend of mine has dropped a fun issue one on me.

The situation is a samsung D1070 has saved/recovered jpgs to HPE format and locked the files so they cant be changed, i am guessing due to battery failure or incorrect removal of the SD card though she wont admit it.  I have run several recovery programs and the files can be recovered, one even let me preview the files so I know it will work but all the programs i have found require a registration fee and I am not forking out £30 for a one off issue so does anyone know of a free or cheep program that will do the job (£10 is the limit)

unlocking the files is not an issue because i have no issue formatting the SD card once recovery has been

Someone on the forums here recommended this nifty little file recovery program a while ago. I used it to salvage 30gb's of data very easily. Good news is that it's free.

I've used it a few times myself. Very nice program indeed.

Recuva is a favorite of mine.

Also the Ultimate Boot CD should have some data recovery tools, though read and write problems are always a pain in the rear.

Not a bad program, but it dont seem to be the type I am after.  The issue i have is that the files have been recovered into this .HPE format by the camera and what i need is a program that will open these files and extract the jpegs and the camera wont do it.  The closest i have got is CardRecovery www.cardrecovery.com but it has a £32 price tag on the registered version and the trial will only get you to the point where you can preview the recoverable files  :banghead:

The other program has locked you out of the recovered data; it's useless. Go ahead and use recuva to re-recover deleted data and save yourself some time than messing around further with hpe (this is also free and faster).

there is a way to configure recuva to do a deeper scan IIRC... which is what you may need to do.  Basically, instead of looking for just deleted files from an intact partition, also look for files that are lost from a formatting of a partition.

It wasn't identifying that the HPE files as what i am after, i think because they are not in themselves corrupted so normal scan didn't identify them at all and the deep scan either picked up the files and didn't know what to do with them or identified the remains of the original jpgs that the camera couldn't recover and tried to recover the fragments resulting in a  _md9884.tmp  and a mass of files it didn't bother with as they had no size.  I would give you screen dumps but the friend wanted the camera back earlier and she took the card and i am waiting for them to finish with it.

It's very likely you might not be able to re-recover everything. Every read and write on a storage medium you're trying to recover deleted files from matters in that it will change the outcome of what is recovered. Of course, i'm pretty sure we all know this. What i'm getting at is you may just want to deal with the hpe locked files since that appears to have gotten what you wanted.

There's another way to unlock those hpe files, but i can't really say it here.
