#hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
#hard-light. #hard-light never changes.

#hard-light has changed. It's no longer about spaceships, campaigns, or modding. It's an endless series of battles, fought by drama whores and the depressed.

Most of the actual modding discussion and FreeSpace talk has moved to #freespace and #bp. Some of the IRClluminati have formed private cabals. #hard-light itself is a bloodbath.

I ask you, people of Hard Light - and I ask this genuinely - should we abandon that channel to be used as a wallowing pit for general bull**** and relationship drama? Or should measures be enacted?

*by measures we mean banning iamzack

**I totally would have done this already but I like mura and I'd feel bad

Can't we just make a #padded_cell channel?  :nervous:

Will "enacting measures" actually restore #hard-light to its former role?  Since satellite channels have already been created would their subject matter/user base return to the #hard-light channel?

What's wrong with a sort of general discussion channel for hard light?

So in a few thousand years we can throw you in a puddle and be free to follow the Golden Path?  Free to scatter throughout the irc channels, never again to face complete domination?

There's nothing wrong with a GD-like channel.

There is something wrong with said channel being taken over by certain people who, despite literally dozens of bannings, are always allowed in.

Should people visiting a restaurant be allowed to converse with each other about anything they wish if others in the restaurant can hear them, and might not like what they are saying?

Now, should people visiting a restaurant be allowed to debase and demean each other calling each other anything they wish, if others in the restaurant can not hear each other and have decent civil conversation because of all the noise?

In the first case, people might not always be happy.  In the second case, they will feel uncomfortable and leave, letting the trolls take over the restaurant.

EDIT: I forgot to point out, in the first case, if you do not allow people to converse freely, the result will be the same as if you allow the second case, that is, they will be uncomfortable and leave, letting power hungry control freaks take over the restaurant.

Aah. The problem with democracy: A lot of people who you allow to decide lack knowledge on the subject.

If it's not serving a beneficial purpose to this forum...

Hate to sound heartless, but maybe it's time we started to remember what this site was made for, and why it had to be created in the first place?

+1

Good point... it is true that this isn't the only way to communicate, and this forum is for a specific purpose.

EDIT: for example, it would be entirely acceptable to eject people having everyday random conversations from a science forum if it was not allowed to have general discussion there.

Ban iamzack. Seriously, that is like the only real issue with the channel.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
well, iamzack has her own channel (#iamzack) which she's usually in, so if she was to be banned, people could always remain in contact if they so wished.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
I used to pop in on the channel every once in a while, but ever since iamzack seemingly became a regular, I've had very little interest in doing so.  I try to keep my intake of inane drama-whoring to a minimum, thank you very much.
