Author Topic: Cold Element?  (Read 6756 times)

I've heard a few bits here and there that both Derelict and, apperently, Blackwater Operations, are part of the 'Cold Element' story.
Or something

So what exactly is 'Codl Element', and which campaigns are part of it?

I'm defining it as a serie of campaigns, set in Freespace universe with the same fan-made alterations [like shipclasses, nodemap, unique ships etc.].

Could you please remind me what twilight is? I do remember an old post capella campaign I once played whose last mission involved the destruction of a faustus so the shivans could attack a rogue orion... it also involved a custom fighter (don't remember the name) of the TV war era... might that be in fact twilight?

Dear Lord, why does one consider Twilight?

I've always felt that Twilight - just like a recent series of novels - was effectively described as an adventure in terrible. Now, you're free to check it out, of course. In fact, now that you've started on your adventure, you might as well carry it through. After all, an adventure in terrible is only made manifest when you experience it for yourself... :p

In a more serious light, I felt the writing with respect to briefings, dialogue, and plot (aka, in general) were not well thought through, tech elements were poorly chosen for a Post-Capella setting, etc. If memory serves proper, Twilight is a "fan-made story installment to a fan-made story," and it shows.

And yes, starlord, your memory serves you well. That's the last mission of the campaign (or one of the last), complete with that rediculous, over-sized fighter.

  • i wonder when my postcount will exceed my iq
Some of Cold Element is either eh (Warzone) or actively kinda bad (Twilight) but Derelict was tight and BWO promises to be awesome.

I think of Warzone in the positive of the "eh" scale, as it's really pretty decent as a whole when it comes to gameplay and storyline. It will never be the best, certainly, but I thought it worked itself out well. Compare it to something like Aeos Affair, which does not have good writing, and often has poorly devised gameplay or operations. Both are a bit campy, but only the former "jives well" with its campyness. Of course, that's only my opinion.

Sounds like a SGWP2 mission to me.

Must be. I can't even remember a mission in Warzone that actually had that many ships.

There's one mission where you escort a convoy or something and then when they leave this comparatively huge Shivan force shows up.  And doesn't do anything.  At all.  It sits there until you shoot at them.  And the waves keep respawning.  I got six Rakshasa kills that mission, IIRC, because I'd just sit back and lob trebs and call a support ship every once in a while.  And lots of fighter kills.  Lots.

I very much enjoy playing through Warzone myself.  It wasn't quite the absolute classic that Derelict is, but it's solid through and through.

Too bad Aftermath and Twilight don't work on the latest MediaVPs.. Heck, I even tried with 3.6.10 MediaVPs. Both throw up a bunch of warnings that I can't be arsed to sort out.

Where's FSCRP when you need em?....  :doubt:
