Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
Planes are hard, start with rockets. KSP atmosphere has consistency of a thick soup, so you'll need to pack a lot more fuel than common sense would dictate.

Yeah, planes can be very twitchy and apt to wig out even if you (kind of) know what you're doing, especially if you're like me and don't take into account how the weight distribution changes as you burn off fuel.  Turns out that rocket science really is (comparatively) simpler.

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
Or, well, kerbal style. My first spaceplane was literally an orange tank, a mainsail, a bunch of wings and a probe head. Gear obviously. (afterthought) It never left the ground.

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
Airplane parts update! Time to redo my spaceplane, and build a supersonic rescue VTOL. Wheee!

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
Recently, I've been creating turbines of various sorts and trying to fit them into vehicles of various kinds.

This one was the first test rig I built to see if an impulse turbine was a viable option. Turns out it is - the exhaust damage mechanic pushes parts it hits backwards...

Once I had established this could actually be done, it didn't take long to adapt one of my previous designs to be powered by this new invention:

One of the first production units was a massive single rotor turbine with two metres diameter and sixteen burners powering it. As soon as it was functional, a simple aircraft was built around this powerplant to test its viability. The power is impressive, however the torque effects are a significant problem for the small aircraft.

To reduce the problems with torque effects, kerbal engineers decided to just glue together two turbines working in different directions - creating a coaxial rotor and turbine design with approximately one metre diameter, suitably small for placement in small-ish vehicles. However as kerbals have so far only figured out how to adjust blade angles collectively, the only way to implement cyclic control is to put RCS thrusters on the blade tips. Regardless of the unorthodox solution, the resulting rotary-wing aircraft is quite controllable - well enough to land accurately on small elevated platforms.

The development was not without cost, however. This brave launch site structure was lost in an unfortunate collision. Your sacrifice will be remembered.

The helicopter was fine and could simply rev up its rotors, engage negative angle of attack for taking off upside down, then gather enough altitude to flip the right way...

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
I'd like to pose a challenge to anyone who is interested in it:

Aim for the fastest possible Kerbin atmospheric entry speed.  The angle doesn't matter, but best to aim straight down.  Also, for reference, we'll say top of atmo is 70km.  Bonus for using gravitational assists from other planets to boost your intersect speed, or doing a full retrograde orbit of the Sun and meeting Kerbin backwards.  Further bonus points for style, e.g. killing many Kerbals in the process.

Tip:  It's better to wait to use all of your remaining fuel at the last possible moment before hitting atmo.  Using it all up earlier wastes the potential from the gravitational well -- same idea as of the Oberth effect.

Best that I've done is 5700m/s, but that was ages ago and probably not very impressive.

thats pretty much every aerocapture maneuver while returning from jool missions.

you might head for jool and gravity assist off it and possibly some of its moons. once that is complete flip your plane 180 degrees to meet kerbin retrograde. in this case a glancing blow is best, it will be impossible to slow that down before meeting the dirt.

CKAN, a mod manager for KSP, was released few days ago.

Best thing is, it takes care of dependencies automatically. Installing entire Realism Overhaul with a single command is awesome. This should make getting into mods so much easier.

My efforts with Infernal Robotics have produced a prototype rotor swashplate for cyclic and collective controls.

Now to see if there's any way I could actually turn this into a useful way to control rotary wing aircraft...

I was gonna say that, but couldn't think of the right way to do it. Maybe by exploding something?

Kerbal Space Program looks epic. So totally thinking of getting it.
Might get the demo and have a crack first.
Too many ideas.....not enough FREDing time!

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
1.0 release was a bit of a bummer, it's got quite a few nasty bugs. 1.0.1 is currently in the works (it'll hopefully be out soon and address some of the worst bugs). Try the demo, by all means, but they kind of botched the big release. It clearly didn't get enough testing and had some features cut.

Re: Kerbal Space Program or "Rocket science is harder than it looks"
Yes scanning the forums I noticed that they have a mod to fix recurring bugs, but these things happen and still looks really good.
Unfortunately I wont be able to get it while its cheaper but you know, $40 USD (which is around 45-50 AUD) isnt much. Still half price of a AAA game.
