The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
Long long ago, when FSO was still in it's infancy, I believe, my friend and I started to create a campaign involving a secret government project that was building the "ultimate anti-capital ship" in the form of a super-corvette. You (as Alpha 1, of course) would be flying as one of its fighter protectors as the corvette would have very little anti-fighter defenses by itself.

We only completed one mission sadly, and a second mission was halfway there. Recently, I replayed the first mission with the advanced graphical upgrades and such. I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed it. So, I've been thinking of re-starting the campaign creation.

I don't know if I can get into contact with my friend, but hopefully, it all turns out well.

What about that corvette? You have a model?
Oh guys, use that [ url ][ img ][ /img ][ /url ] :/

I don't currently have a unique model for the ship, unfortunately. At the time, we used a Sobek-class ship, but I'd like to have something more interesting eventually.

Still, I'm not that good of a modeler.

With all the user-made ships around, you shouldn't have any problem finding one that suits your needs.

You'd be surprised, I was looking for a corvette-cruiser sized (Terran) "cannon" type ship, and couldn't find a really good model for it. Though in that case, I needed a (mostly) static orbital weapon.

If you need new model and you can't find anything proper, call a friendly modeler or check various modeldumps and then, finish something from modeldumps [or find someone who can help you with this].

Know any particularly good ones about? Good modeldumps, that is.
I'm a little busy with RL things at the moment. So, a model that I can use as a base would be great.

I'd change it... and change it... and change it... until I got something that I'm satisfied with. I've always been better working from some base starting point than from scratch, anyway.

There are several modeldumps on FSMods.net.

Okay, it may be a while before I get started since FRED2 Open just doesn't want to even start.

Is that supposed to be a re-imagined Deimos?

There are many awesome modeldumps... maybe not many but there are still at least 'some'. Most of them contains mid- or low-poly models, but a good concept is always worth attention. You should check them all, since the number of them is not infinitive. This is what me and Betrayal do, but a little slowly.

Its an enlarged deimos with a fighterbay, pretty much. In terms of performance at least.
Totally new mesh.

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
I wish you good luck with the project, remember it takes it's time. Write down any ideas, big and small, and sort them out into a whole, rinse and repeat in new paragraphs for at least several days. Also a note, the Arpyia is great, the version I found some time ago was extremely reflective though, like it's hull was made of mirror glass materials. Nonetheless a very nice frigate to work with.
I'm all about getting the most out of games, so whenever I discover something very strange or push the limits, I upload them here:

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
There are also many other interested and already ready for game ships, such as callypso, but they are often a little lowpoly. Search the forum and fsmods. And if you would like completely new model, don't be discouraged, finding a good modeller with proper amount of free time is never impossible. Good luck on the campaing.

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
While the Arpyia is really neat (and I may end up using it for a mission or two), I kinda want something that fits with what I've imagined already. Which means that I may end up modeling it myself, just looking for a proper ship to edit.

I do have a question though. Aside for changing the .pof into a file-type that Blender (or Max) can read, what else should I pay attention to when editing pre-existing ship models?

There was a long-range beam corvette....Nike I belive it was called?

Then you could always use the Retribution frigate (altough it's a older model)... Or the Cobra?

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
Of these, only the Cobra has a spinal cannon, while not having other large weapons, but I found it too weird.
Nike is old and outdated, Axem was making a HTL version, but stopped.

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
You don't need to be restricted to the existing armament, just grab a ship that you like:
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User-made_Ships

And re-table the weapons. Pretty simple.
The Calypso's a nice lookin ship: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTCv_Calypso

Obviously you'll need to neuter it severly in the anti-fighter department but that takes all of about 5-6 minutes tops with notepad and  table edit. It does also have a big beam emitted on the fore of the craft. Could throw a BFGreen or something similarly powerful (the glow and beam might be a bit too big for that, dunno)

Re: The Excalibur Project (A personal campaign long dead... revived?)
Wow wow. Sorry for disappearing like that.
College got really demanding all of a sudden.

I'm really busy working with UDK Editor, but I'll try my best to get back to this as soon as possible.
Also, it's possible that I might end up asking a modeler for help here because of my current schedule.

Well, I hope to be back again very soon.
