well i guess that explains the two promotions in a short time.  i had thought the objectives must have been made worth a ****load of points.

and i thought you got credit for the lucy if you destroyed all/most of the reactors.  guess not.

I think there is one mission, maybe Running the Gauntlet, where the Lucifer wasn't actually set to invulnerable, so you could technically kill it just by shooting at it all day.

It's actually in Awakenings.  I had misremembered it the same way myself.

One of my roommates actually took it upon himself to destroy it with nothing more than a Valkyrie armed with Prometheuses and Furies.  I was very impressed.  We had a good laugh afterwards when it showed up again next mission.

FS1 didn't have a huge flag. The Lucifer was explicitly set to invulnerable. If it's not invulnerable, you can kill anything in FS1 with primaries.

FS1 did indeed have a "huge" flag.  What it didn't have, and what you're thinking of, is the "big damage" flag.

On my second play-through on hard of the FS2 campaign. I am a Commander with 1,165 kills.

Admiral would therefore be. . . twenty plays in?

Do you still get credit for the Sathanas kill in FSOpen? I imagine the bounty of points it nets you would make a difference. (ie if you don't get the points, it's kinda a big deal). Though, this is assuming the Sathanas is worth a lot of points I don't know.

Back in retail anyway, the beam damage wouldn't count for kills so if you did a bit of bomb damage to the sathanas and the colossus killed the rest of it off you'd still get the kill.

Yes, you can still get the Sath kill. Beam damage only counts towards kills if you change AI_Profiles.tbl

Sath kills make up 20,000 of the 50,000 points it took to get Commander.

Also kill the SC Thanatos for 10k

So saths and Thanatos will add up to 40k after 2 runs even if you kill nothing else.
