Descent3/Freespace timeframe
Does anyone know if Descent 3 happened during the freespace timeframe? Like: after FreeSpace 1 and sepreated from everyone else?
Or: During FS2 but still isolated?
Or: Before FS1
Or:

Descent was just tacked on to the original FreeSpace, I don't know why. They aren't the same universe.

It was done for marketing reasons, because Descent sold well in the US. In Europe, the opposite happened, so they changed it to Conflict: Freespace; The Great War

Yep, and although at first glance it's possible to merge them they do infact have features which negate the other universe. Most namely the alien virus in Descent (which would infect and FS ship one would assume). As well as the Pyro in Descent 2 being fitted with a warp drive for the jump to Zeta Aquila for the recon missions (which is far more efficient than subspace).

So, no. It wouldn't work.

you could argue that the virus only had a very localized area of effect, and that the warp drive is a PTMC super secret and unique device. Anyway, for various reasons, I'm pretty sure they have notthing in common ( the GTVA isn't ruled by the PTMC as far as I know, for exemple, and the tech in descent is infinitely more evolved, too ). A funny detail, tho: guess how is called the main PTMC station around earth?

Descent isn't related to Freespace in the slightest.
Gargoyles, Season 1.  Buy it, or DIE! :)

Yes, really.

Nowhere in either Freespace titles was PTMC or the Material Defender ever mentioned.  Furthermore, nowhere in any of the 3 descents is the GTA ever mentioned.  Earths military is the CED, not GTA.

Do they ever mention the date in the Descent  games? It could be in the FS universe but many many years later.

probably not though

Dont you just love pointless subtitles?
What wrong with Conflict: Freespace?
No! It has to be Conflict: Freespace: The Great War
Or Operation Flashpoint?
No! It's Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis.
Not to mention Acanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura!

It's like they say things that just don't need to be said. I mean take this timeless classic example...

Thunder:The Most Amazing Man On The Planet

I mean, everyone knows the statement is true so why say it? It's a waste of space!

D3 could have been after FS1, thus only in SOL...

I think there's a good chance the events of the Descent series could be between FS1 and FS2. The rise of corporations after the collapse of the Earth-based GTA fits well, and the CED probably arose from that threat. Technology seems to be at a similar level with Freespace 2, but on a different course. Note the CED Expediator in D3; missle tubes! A good chance of how Solar military technology evolved instead of beams.
As for the warp drive in D2, how did PTMC get to those systems anyway? It's possible those systems weren't linked by jump nodes to the rest of the galaxy so it would be impossible to get military forces or colonisation there. PTMC must have used its warp tech to set up bases in Zeta Aquilae, Brimspark, and the Limefrost Spiral without the GTA's knowledge or intervention.

I'm really disappointed that there weren't any crossover ships or weapons. Why can't somebody make the Pyro, Phoenix, and Magnum in FS2? :( The only hint we get is that the Synaptic bomb in FS1 was nicknamed the "Earthshaker" according to the tech description. There was actually a great opportunity for crossover in Red Faction, too; for Ultor, read: PTMC. Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? Particularly when there is a bloody mining revolt mentioned in the first Descent 1 briefing, which Material Defender apparently had a large part in. Since RF was originally going to be D4, a prequel, methinks Parker was our very own Descent pilot, but all references to Descent probably had to be changed because Outrage's distributor owned the rights.

I seemed to remember reading somewhere that the Descent/Conflict part was stuck on to get round the fact that 'Freespace' was alread copywrited to some disk compression utility. After trying some different names, some of which apparently were pretty bad, they ended up sticking Descent/Conflict on before the name for the reasons stated above. Thus copywrite wasn't broken.

I guess copywrite wasn't broken by sticking s '2' after the name.

Just one question to those agueeing that Descent and Freespace could have tken place in the same universe. If they had, why the hell was the game called Conflict:Freespace outside the US? That would have annoyed quite a few people would it not?

Perhaps a lot of the non-english speaking countries were reading it as decent freespace and thinking "Well I`d spend money on good freespace or excellent freespace but I can`t afford decent freespace" :D

What I heard is that :v: was going to call subsapce freespace. They put conflict on it to say that it was a war over freespace or subspace. They should have called it Conflict here in the US also.
