Did people forget about the entire 4x genre "before Sins" or something? I mean seriously...

SotS is Sword of the Stars.
The acronym for Sins happens to be SoaSE.

Typo (and fixed it) Doesn't change the meaning of the post though... except that if someone called it a sots ripoff it actually wouldn't be quite as bad as calling it a sins ripoff... as due to its real time constraints Sins arguably waters down the complexity of the 4x experience quite a bit.

SE and SOTS have practicly nothing in common aside form being turn-based. Heck, I'd say SOTS has more differences then SoASE.

For one it has a randomized tech tree, so no game is the same (and there is no "I-Win" tech pah)
The galaxy is 3D (but you can also paly on 2D maps)
Technologies interact in very complex ways, it is NOT A spreadsheet game.
You can design your ships in a lot of detail - and everything matters.
Ship use newtonian movement and real-time targeting. Hits or misses aren't pre-calculated.  Shots can bounce off armor if the angle is right. Missiles can pass trough a hole in a ship. You can target specific polygons on a ship to strip off turrets, etc.
Far less micromanagment.

SotS2 sucks.  There, I said it.  The UI is horrid, the game is buggy, and the execution of features is poor.

SotS1 on the other hand, well, its had two expansions and a ship add-on, and really only A Murder of Crows or Argos Naval Yard is worth playing.

Actually, they have a a different opinion to you. That is neither illegal nor any indication of relative values, intelligence or appreciation of computer games.

I'm perfectly aware of what usually happens when you start discussing SoTS with people who don't enjoy it as much, and this thread will end up locked like the others if it turns into another stream of abuse.

Nothing in common but the genre and core game mechanics. The execution, realisation and gameplay depth are of course hugely different, I completely agree.

The way I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) is that Endless Space is the offspring of Gratuitous Space Battles and Civilization.
I'm pretty new to the 4X genre but am debating getting ES or SoTS collector's Edition in the upcoming steam sale. I tried the SoTS demo and enjoyed it a lot, and I've been following ES since it was first announced. Decisions, decisions.

ES combat, although pretty, has far too little user input involved or rather; I don't get enough CONTROL of the (faux) realtime sequences to engage me or convince one to part with hard (and I mean HARD) earned cash.....

According to Mecron, the All-Clear is around the corner (a patch or two away). The devs put in additional content here and there as a "thank you".
So it should be at the stage it should have been at release. Except better.
They also hinted that an expansion will be coming.

SOTS2 setup is a bit arsey. I got the DVD which has sol force expansion on it... Steam downloads the thing rather than install from disc, no sol force, or the option to install it on autorun or steam...

I'll believe it when I see it Tried multiplayer just a couple of weeks ago and it still had showstopping (combatrelated) crashbugs as well as a horribly laggy UI in general.
... and once they have a stable game that one can actually play in multiplayer we'll see how many balancing issues there are... 

It certainly might be "playable" next month.... but "release ready"? With their history, I wouldn t be surprised if it took another year lol.

Maybe the game is actually playable by that time and probably dropped to the price the game is worth, which is not 20+ euro/dollar/pound/yen. (okay, 20 yen actually sounds reasonable enough). I feel sorry for the people that got cheated/deceived/scammed into paying for the game full price though.
Unlike Endless space, which has received endless praise for being so polished in the beta stage.

Pity the game was actually released in October of 2011 and it's taken them nine months and counting, isn't it? I remember when Mecron said this...three months ago.

And this is, of course, Mecron's idea of "All Clear"; his proclivities about service and mistreatment of the public rival those of Derek Smart during the Bad Old Days.

TrashMan: Please, for once in your life, try to remember that a) your opinion is not a globally accepted standard of quality, b) no, it shouldn't be and c) all the fanboying in the world will not make the questionable decisions made regarding SotS2's release any less questionable.

So please, if you see an argument over it brewing, just walk away. You have said your piece, and maybe, just maybe your staunch faith will eventually be rewarded.

SOTS2 at release was a terrible, unplayable mess, but that is irrelevant. I'm talking about how the game is NOW. The past is in the past.

Also, opinions can be wrong and butthurt people can carry a grudge forever.
