"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Kinda old news, but still funny. On the topic, there is no way of making a copy protection system work while the user (and potential "pirate") has access to both the media containing the data and the playback device...

My thought is that if companies didn't spend so much time writing copy protection stuff...lowered the price of their software because of it....it may persuade people to actually buy it.  Sounds kinda like an 'honor' system but the fact of the matter is that although Napster alikes are widely prevalent...CD sales are just as good as they used to be if not better.

Digital media and the internet is not something to be feared....its something to embrace.  But as predicatably usual...the big companies are the last to clue in that new stuff isn't neccessarily bad.

It happened with the telegraph, it happened with the telephone, it happened with the radio and TV....and things will hopefully remain sane with the Internet too.

Exactly. They spend millions of dollars on copy protection systems that are broken by some unnamed guy ten seconds after they are released, and they spend millions of dollars on stupid lawsuits against companies that provide file-sharing services, just to see two other companies take the place of the one that they just closed. They're just throwing money out of the window and making a big ruckus out of it.

over 50? over 70 I'd say.
anyway, all that is crap, because they can put millions of dallars and stuff like that, against them, there's thousands and thousands of hackers that won't follow schedules or work for money, but their own personal glory, and it's then that anarchy beats structured endeavour.
They all completly miss the point, it's rather pathetic.

Oh well, back to safety pencils and chalk sticks for me, then...

Actually, a pencil is the thing that has wounded me the most in my entire life. Bastard pencils. Marker pens are nicer to me...

Oils.

Oil paints are snot of the devil.  I can't use them, they're gooey, they're messy and you get your hands covered in muck.

bleurgh.

And you come out smelling like a petrol tank.

It's an un-funny story.

Once upon I time I was drawing, for some reason. I'm not all that great, but I try. Anyway, I needed to sharpen the pencil, so I did. It was very sharp. I tried to draw with it.

The next part is somewhat hazy...

For some reason the pencil ended up being flicked up into the air. Rather than let it fall to the ground and pick it up, like any sane, normal person would I tried to catch it. Again, I don't know why. Anyway, I caught it. Sharp end first. :o The sharp end pierced my skin, went into the centre of my palm and hit the bone. I think it was chipped or something.

End result = lots of blood, but no pain (must've been in shock). I was in a sling and couldn't write for a couple of weeks (right hand) and I still have an ugly scar to this day.

Commence the mockery, Mr. Sticks! :p
