A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
This is not exactly my first rodeo in getting my Freespace 2 modded, but this is the first time that I have decided to go with the FSO Installer route.  The other route that I had taken was just the hard copy-pasting route from before.  But I might arguably be rusty since this was almost a good year ago on my previous computer.

After two days, I'm not sure which one is the larger mistake.

First off the bat is the FSO installer, after I had done the works, and followed the directions given on the installer page, I earn this little ditty.

Post-Installation Notes for Transcend
IMPORTANT NOTE: There was an error while installing this section. You may need to run the Installer again in order to ensure that this section works correctly.

Post-Installation Notes for Sync

Post-Installation Notes for Twilight

Post-Installation Notes for Blue Planet

Post-Installation Notes for Enhanced Graphics
IMPORTANT NOTE: There was an error while installing this section. You may need to run the Installer again in order to ensure that this section works correctly.

That was yesterday.  No panic, but then I go with trying to download and manually put them into folders in order that they work.  I figured that should work out.  No problems there.

That is until I try running Blue Planet and BP WiH, I don't exactly have the error log (surprise, it disappeared from my word processor), but it was almost as if the 3_6_14 wasn't even there when I tried to use it.

At first I thought it would just be BP, but no, it turns out everything either doesn't want to run, OR, those that ran, can't remember the name, I think it was Cardinal Spear, ended up with the cockpit being a complete cornered up to the left, so I could not see anything.

Anyways, I humbly implore for a bit of assistance, because I am almost at wit's end over this, and I really loved when I played AoA and other mods, I would honestly like to get all my FS modding experience in this time around without worry.

Thanks.

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
Please post your fs2_open.log.

And the installer (the current one, anyway) should be avoided like the plague; it's caused problems for many a newbie.

Why is that installer even still on the site anyway? It was here just over a year ago when I joined, and it didn't work then. Why not remove it until it functions as intended?

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
Well, you need a different executable for the latest release of Blueplanet, not 3.6.14.

As for the "installer" that others have mentioned, that's the one linked in the top nav bar (next to Mantis).  Blueplanet does have a windows installer, although it should not have given you 3.6.14...

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
Funny.  This time around, the 3.6.17 actually worked.  Every single time last time I got a "program has ceased working" error.

Should I just run through every single coding issue for all the others that came with the installer?

Edit:  Nevermind, not working.  Every time I try to jump into a mission I get a "Freespace 2 Open - Antipodes has stopped working."  Blah-de-blah.  That's on the debug, it won't even start running on the normal version.  So much for all that money I spent on this bloody laptop.  Feels more like a toaster than something for me to put my nostalgia glasses back on for.

What exactly do you mean by that? Does nothing happen, does it display an error message, or something else?

Whatever the case, it could still be very helpful to us if you post your fs2_open.log. (No, the error message that you posted earlier is not what I'm referring to. Follow the link to see what I mean.)

Try using something other than the 3.6.17 build (like 3.6.14) to play something other than Blue Planet. BP right now has a bunch of cutting-edge features that are absolutely killing low end rigs.

I proposed this on another thread in regards to the installer. Following HLP's "customer support" heuristics from well-known members, we should make the process as nightmare-free for new people using FreeSpace Open. The installer makes the situation worse. Until Goober5000 releases the new installer, then tab should be destroyed and the site download links removed. Hopefully that will also get Goober to work on the thing more, too! :nervous:

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)

There is no debug issue or error message, I merely get a "Freespace Open - Antipodes has stopped working" when I run it in standard mode.

When I run it in debug mode, I can get into the game, do just about everything in it.  That is, until you get into the briefing and start the mission, it then crashes and gives me the "has stopped working".  There is no error log, nothing.

That's kinda what I'm not hoping to hear, considering I spent quite a bit on this laptop so I can handle almost everything that can be thrown at it.  Kinda hard for me to sit here and accept that this laptop can't crack it when it handles just about everything thrown at it up until now while the loan is still being paid and the laptop is just 6 months old and I got a taste of BP back during the 3.6.14, and brought it back after I found out WiH was finally into the 20s for missions.

Could it be some kinda issue between Windows and 3.6.17 that I can ameliorate?

If that's the case, then I'm 99% sure that a log file was produced, but you haven't found it. Have you followed any of the links that I posted here (both of which point to the same post)? I am referring to a file that is actually named "fs2_open.log". Its contents should look something like this:

Understood, I'll take a crack at it when I get back from work tonight and let you know.  Thanks for the help up til now.

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
Unfortunately Intel HD graphics are probably not going to cut it.  :( But here's what might help -

First, you should NOT be using the adv_bp2 and adv_bp VPs. Go into the blueplanet andblueplanet2 folders and delete those two VPs. Second, try one of the builds from the 'Build Repository' thread in the Blue Planet forum. Once in-game, go to the options screen, graphics detail, and turn 'Lighting Detail' all the way down.

Does the game crash in the same way when you go to the tech room?

Does the game crash in the same way when you go to the tech room?

Got into the first mission, thanks.  I don't really understand it, but when I double-click the launcher, it automatically launches with Intel HD, but when I right click, it says the Nvidia is the default graphics processor.  Strange, I guess I'll just have to right click it from now on.

Anyways, I'll run it further tonight when I get my laptop setup with the controllers and everything.  I'm actually dinking around on the laptop cuz we're dead at work /shrugs.

I'll give an update in about 7-8 hours.

Re: A whole world of questions and confusion (starting from FSO and going on)
Updates a little late, but I would like to say thank you for all the help.  I got BP running relatively well. some major slowdowns in framerate and actual momentary freezing, but I can live with that as long as it doesn't crash.  It seems the more I run the mod, the more smoothly it runs in not giving me errors.  Thanks again.
