Game of Thrones 3x04 - And Now His Watch Is Ended
For the first time so far, a scene in the show is way better than in the books (Astapor).

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I was looking forward to how the Sack of Astapor was portrayed. I was not disappointed.

And Ramsay Bolton messing with Theon was entirely accurate. I am (not) looking forward to seeing more of him.

In other news, nekkid Ygritte and Sandor vs Dondarrian next episode.
In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed.

Are they back to following the plot lines of the books yet, or does season 3 pull more of the season 2 bull**** and throw in changes for no apparent reasons other than to mess with the written story?

Is that really a thing that one should care about? No adaptation will ever be accurate; Personally, I'm just happy getting really good telly out of this.

I mean, just as the LOTR films were not direct translation of the books to make them work better as films, this isn't a direct translation of the books so the story works better in the TV show format.

(Disclaimer: I have never read the books, and do not intend to)

You've presumably read the books, and are therefore unable to evaluate changes made for TV from the perspective of someone who doesn't already understand the major plot points.

Just saw 3x05 - only thing I'll say is that I really like how bold they're being with the songs in this show... having The Bear and the Maiden Fair as the end credits song a few weeks ago, and then having Patchface's jingle this week... quite bold. :)

Indeed.

Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else who has read the books can comment if they've quit diverging as significantly in season 3 as they did in season 2.  I know Martin is a creative consultant for the show and he's helping streamline, but honestly the plots of the books have enough confusion written in without adding an alternate version in a TV show.  It's annoying, because the show is quite good, but there were some conflicting point points emerging in season 2, to the point where I said screw it and stopped watching.

I would recommend Season 3 quite heartily - while I am happy to talk **** about everything wrong with both books and show, I think S3 has been really strong.

Re: Game of Thrones 3x04 - And Now His Watch Is Ended
MP, they are still making some derivations from the books, the most noticeable so far are that Jamie and Brienne are captured by Dreadfort banner men rather than the Bloody Mummers, Ser Barristan entered Daenerys' service openly instead of utilizing an alias (and not accompanied by Strong Belwas), Sam has yet to earn his nickname before things went sour at Crasters' Keep and Theon's having some odd and confusing times at Dreadfort.

The changes are still developing, so I can't hazard a guess if they will play out as good or better than the books, that said it's been a strong season so far.  Adventures in contracts and negotiations in Astapor being particularly well executed.
