Admins, what are your thoughts on posting the stu_fs2.vp (voices), fs2.exe, and MVE files from the international versions? I believe that some of these can help the FSU team in the future (since the MediaVPs have a few replacement English voice files that override the German/Polish ones), but I don't know if there would be any overwhelming copyright concerns about this.

I have original Polish version, probably patched, with english root. I have polish root as well, and I can use it for this. The queston is: Is there any problem with Open installed? Must I remove all of the mods/Open files/MVPs?

Do you have the original discs? If so, then it is preferable (though technically not required) to start with an unmodified installation. If you have the discs, do the following if possible:

• Copy (not move) your FS2 installation to a different location.
• Uninstall FS2 (the original, not the copy).
• Delete the folder where FS2 was originally installed. This will ensure a clean installation.
• Follow the steps in the original post of this thread, installing to the folder that you just deleted. (And yes, you are allowed to run that particular patch program.)
• Once you've done that, I will probably ask you to extract or save some files, so don't delete or modify your installation. In the meantime, you can play with the copied installation, though you will likely have to reconfigure your launcher.

Great! Normally, I would have you extract some files from the VPs and send those to me. In this case, however, I want you to send me the root_fs2.vp file since so many of its files are different. I also want you to send me your FS2.exe since the original source release didn't have anything regarding the Polish version (only English, German, and French).

Once you've done that, don't delete your Polish FS2 installation; I may ask for more files.

All right, I've had a look at the file differences. Here's what I've found:

• credits.tbl: Some of the XSTR strings (about half) got real tstrings.tbl indices. Others were simply translated.
• cutscenes.tbl: The cutscene names didn't use XSTR structures, so they were translated here.
• help.tbl: All the text was translated, and some of the parameters were changed to match the text width.
• launchhelp.tbl: The text here was translated. Nothing fancy.
• messages.tbl: Nothing related translation happened here, but an error that exists in the English and German versions was fixed where the Terran "Awacs at 25" and Vasudan "Awacs at 75" messages used the wrong voice files.
• rank.tbl: Similar to cutscenes.tbl, the non-XSTR'd rank names were translated.
• strings.tbl/tstrings.tbl: These files have only a Polish entry; no English, German, or French entry exists.
• A large number of mission files were changed. Most of the changes involve removal of trailing space, but some of them involve translating things like icon and ship names. Here is a list of the mission files that were changed:
  
  • All missions of the FS2 campaign
  • All Templar missions
  • All gauntlet missions
  • All M-xx missions
  • All MT-xx missions

Since I also have the Polish FS2.exe (and am able to run it), I can see how it runs compared to FSO. (Yes, FSO is missing some of the hardcoded Polish translations.)

While polish version is pretty badly translated [dialogues were recorded using some s**ty synthesizer etc] I hope one day I will be able to play fully polish FS2 again. Despite obvious reasons, polish translation is pretty funny. It's somekind of longing. Polish players knows what I'm talking about .

The files that you sent me allow me to see how the Polish retail version works compared to FSO when using the Polish data. Indeed, I've already found some differences, such as medal names not being translated. I am currently working on a patch to remedy this. Once it's done (and it will be very soon), I will send it to the other SCP guys to get it committed.

If the Polish translation and voices were poorly made, then there isn't much that the SCP and FSU teams can do about it. Fixing it would require a group of translators and voice actors, which the aforementioned teams do not maintain. If you or someone else wants to give it a try, though, go right ahead.

(Are the human voices really synthesized? If so, then that must have been some extremely low-budget localization! I'm sure that they could have at least hired some Polish voice actors if they wanted to...)

I will provide some screenshots when I have the time, but it isn't unlikley that I screwed up my installation, thats why I didn't report it to mantis first.

This happens if you play the German version of the game in Engilsh. If you're running Windows, then you can change the in-game language to German by following the instructions in this link. There are two things that you must do differently, though:

• If you're running 64-bit Windows, then the registry folder that you need to go to is HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Classes -> VirtualStore -> MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Wow6432Node -> Volition -> Freespace2.
• Instead of setting the language to English, set it to German.

If you're not running Windows, then I think the language setting is stored in a file somewhere. I don't know where, though.
